To mark the sixth day of Advent, we sit down with Chelsea Women's number six Sjoeke Nusken to talk about her Christmas traditions.
We start the interview by explaining the concept: we want to talk to our No.6 about Christmas on the sixth day of Advent.
'Is the sixth of December a special day in England as well?' asks Nusken. We're unsure what she means, but then the Blues midfielder explains a tradition in her native Germany, which only makes the idea of this feature more appropriate.
'It's a special day in Germany,' she replies. 'You put your boots outside, you write your wishes for Christmas on paper, then you put the paper inside your boots. Then St. Nicholas comes to pick up the wishes.'
We find out it's called Nikolaustag, a day when children find out whether they've been naughty or nice, depending on what St. Nicholas leaves in their polished boots.
Nusken has certainly been good this year and is looking forward to spending Christmas in Germany with her family.
'I always spend Christmas at home with my parents and my three sisters,' she says of her festive traditions. 'Every single year is special because I like to spend time with my family, especially because everyone is happy and enjoying the time together. Everyone's forgetting the stress and just relaxing.
'When I was young, I got a lot of footballs – and stuff from Bayern Munich as well. I was a fan of the men’s team and my blankets and stuff on my bed were Bayern Munich – the jerseys as well. So I was always getting a lot of things like this.
'In Germany, we celebrate on the 24th day. We sit together, having dinner. We go to church, then come back and have a little tradition where we sing Christmas songs together. Sometimes I play my flute, and my sisters are there as well, so we sit together, singing, and then we open the presents one after the other.
'I'm the youngest, so I can start, and I can pick up a present for someone else. So maybe my sister, for example, opens it and she will get the next present for another person. It takes ages!
'I like to help prepare the dinner, and we all do it together. I like giving and receiving gifts! I think it’s changed a little bit over the years; when I was younger, I was just thinking about getting presents, but now I enjoy giving a gift. When other people are happy, I'm happy.'
Nusken signed for Chelsea in 2023 and has picked up one English Christmas tradition that she'd be happy to take home to Germany.
'The one English thing I've picked up at Chelsea is where you cross hands and pull a cracker,' the midfielder explains. 'I did this last year with the team. We also have a Secret Santa, a Christmas jumper day and a Christmas lunch together.'
And when we ask her which three of her teammates she'd invite to Christmas dinner, she asks if she can instead name four, to avoid leaving out any of her closest friends.
'I would say Mayra (Ramirez) and Hannah (Hampton) for sure. And then Mara (Alber), because she lives in Germany too, and Livia (Peng). Those four would be perfect.'
