On the third day of Advent, we celebrate several of the most famous hat-tricks in Chelsea history.

Scoring three or more goals in a game is no mean feat, but what marks some above others is the magnitude of the occasion, the quality of the goals or their timing.

It is with those filters in mind that we have made our selection from across our men’s and women’s teams, starting nearly 65 years ago when our greatest scorer of hat-tricks brought the curtain down on his Chelsea career in style…

Jimmy Greaves

Chelsea 4-3 Nottingham Forest
29 April 1961

To acknowledge the legendary contribution Jimmy Greaves made during his time at Chelsea, and before he moved to AC Milan, the striker was appointed captain for his final appearance.

Inevitably, he celebrated the occasion in style, fittingly netting all our goals in a dramatic 4-3 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Bridge.

That was his 13th Chelsea hat-trick – and his sixth of that season alone – a remarkable achievement that will take some beating!

David Speedie

Chelsea 5-4 Manchester City
23 March 1986

David Speedie became the first player to score a hat-trick at Wembley since Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup final in our epic Full Members Cup triumph 20 years later.

In front of a crowd of over 67,000, Speedie bagged three as we overturned an early deficit to lead 5-1, and though Man City made a game of it late on, the Scot had his hands on the matchball and silverware come full-time.

Tore Andre Flo

Tottenham 1-6 Chelsea
6 December 1997

Any match immortalised in song must be a special one, and that is certainly the case for our 6-1 victory at White Hart Lane before Christmas in 1997.

Tore Andre Flo was the Blues hero early in his Chelsea career. The Norwegian broke the deadlock with a first-half header, notched our fourth with a coolly taken close-range finish and rounded off a thumping win by lobbing goalkeeper Ian Walker in front of the rapidly emptying home end.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Chelsea 4-0 Tottenham
13 March 2002

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink netted the most perfect of perfect hat-tricks to help us beat Tottenham 4-0 for the second time in four days.

His first was a whipped strike from distance on the run, bending away from the keeper and nestling in the bottom corner, before he added a second courtesy of a well-placed header.

The third was the pick of the bunch as he bustled his way past two Tottenham defenders before curling a left-footed beauty into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Didier Drogba

Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic
9 May 2010

With the Blues rampant at 4-0 up against 10-man Wigan and the Premier League title clearly secured, the focus turned to ensuring Didier Drogba finished as the division’s top goalscorer.

The Ivorian duly delivered, netting a 17-minute perfect hat-trick in front of the Matthew Harding Stand on one of the greatest days in the club’s history.

Lauren James

Chelsea 3-1 Manchester United
21 January 2024

Lauren James scored a superb hat-trick at Stamford Bridge against her former club in a big clash at the top of the WSL table in January 2024.

James opened the scoring early with a cool finish from a narrow angle, doubled her and our tally with a powerful half-volley past Mary Earps, and rounded things off late on with another composed one-on-one effort to quash any hopes Man Utd had of launching a comeback.

Cole Palmer

Chelsea 4-3 Manchester United
4 April 2024

Chelsea trailed 3-2 in the 98th minute but remarkably left with all three points after Palmer scored twice in a minute to complete his hat-trick.

The attacker had already struck once from the spot when he levelled from 12 yards in the 100th minute of a dramatic contest. Remarkably, there was still time for him to bag the winner with a deflected drive after we played a corner short.

Guro Reiten

Chelsea 8-0 Bristol City
5 May 2024

After Manchester City had slipped up at home to Arsenal earlier in the day, we plundered eight goals past Bristol City at Kingsmeadow to ensure the destiny of the WSL title was back in our hands with two games to goal.

Guro Reiten was the star performer with four goals to her name, including an early penalty and three more in a 21-minute period during a frenetic second half when we dramatically succeeded in overturning a chunky goal difference deficit.

A fifth consecutive WSL triumph was secured later that month.
