Veerle Buurman and Alyssa Thompson have both been named on the shortlist for the 2026 Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year award.
The Blues duo are in the running to be voted England’s best young player by their fellow professional footballers following their impressive debut campaigns for Chelsea.
Buurman joined the Blues in September 2024, but immediately returned to PSV on loan. She was integrated into the Blues first-team squad last summer and featured 24 times across all competitions, scoring her first goal in style in an FA Cup quarter-final win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Thompson, meanwhile, signed for Chelsea last summer from Angel City and made 33 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, the joint-most in the squad alongside Erin Cuthbert. The 21-year-old also netted nine times across all competitions, the second-highest tally behind striker Sam Kerr.
A third of the six-player shortlist announced today is made up of Chelsea players, with the other nominees hoping to take the award being Laura Blindkilde Brown (Manchester City), Freya Godfrey (London Lionesses), Toko Koga (Tottenham Hotspur), Olivia Smith (Arsenal).
The winner will be revealed at the PFA’s annual awards ceremony, which this year takes place at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday 25 August.
