It has been confirmed by FIFA that Chelsea’s first opponent at this summer’s Club World Cup will now be either Los Angeles FC or Club America.

We were due to play Mexican side Club Leon, but they will no longer be participating in the tournament.

In their place, FIFA have decided the team to be admitted will be determined by a play-off match between Los Angeles (runners-up to Club Leon in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions Cup) and Club America (the top ranked team in the Club World Cup confederation ranking at the conclusion of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup).

The winners will automatically qualify for the Club World Cup and will take the position of Club Leon in Group D, joining Chelsea, Flamengo and ES Tunis.

We will meet either Los Angeles or Club America on Monday 16 June in Atlanta. The details of their play-off match, including the date, will be announced in due course.

Los Angeles’ squad includes former Blue Olivier Giroud, while Mexican team Club America have been regular opponents of ours in pre-season, including at the start of this campaign.

We won 3-0 courtesy of goals from Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke and Marc Guiu. That game also took place in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
