This October, Chelsea Foundation proudly marked Black History Month, and this year's theme Power and Pride, by honouring Black excellence through the lens of legendary figures who have inspired generations on and off the pitch.
Throughout the month, Chelsea Foundation hosted a range of workshops, events and educational moments designed to champion the iconic players and pioneers who paved the way. More than 2,500 young people took part across schools, programmes and our Academy teams, learning about the importance of Black History Month and the trailblazers who shaped the way, both in football and wider society.
The workshops centred around the legacy and success of Black legends, including Florent Malouda who visited a local school (pictured above) ahead of the recent Chelsea Legend’s match, sharing his experiences and speaking with students about what Black excellence means to him.
‘Using football and Black History as a support for education is always a good thing,’ Malouda said, reflecting on the importance of connecting sport and learning.
As part of the month, Chelsea Foundation also spoke with current Chelsea players who shared what Black History Month means to them.
Tyrique George said: ‘I’m proud to be Black British. It was great to learn how Chelsea Foundation have been championing Black History Month by highlighting the icons who have paved the way in both football and beyond. No matter what your heritage, we’re all working towards the same goal.’
Kadeisha Buchanan added: ‘Black History Month means recognising the history and what Black people have contributed to the world - our culture, our inventions, which have gone unnoticed. This month gives people the chance to learn something new about Black history, which is really important.
‘On the sports side, it’s amazing to see Black people dominating on the world stage. It motivates me - inspirations like Serena Williams and Usain Bolt. That’s what Black history means to me.’
The connection between football and Black history provided a powerful platform to highlight achievements and challenge discrimination. Values that resonate deeply with Chelsea Foundation’s mission, where pride in our club becomes impact in our community.
At Chelsea Foundation, we are committed to educating, celebrating and empowering our communities all year round.
