Much of European football has paused for a winter break, but there has been no let-up for our loanees in England and Scotland…

In the Championship, it was a mixed festive period for Trevoh Chalobah and Huddersfield. The Terriers lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day but came from behind to beat Blackburn 2-1 at home on Sunday, with Chalobah completing both games. Danny Cowley’s side are now seven points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a home fixture against Stoke on New Year’s Day.

Elsewhere in England’s second tier, Charlton ended an 11-game winless run with a dramatic victory over Bristol City on Boxing Day. Conor Gallagher played the first 52 minutes and left the pitch at 1-1 after suffering a blow to his hip. The Addicks then went behind but recovered to win courtesy of a late Alfie Doughty goal.

Yesterday, Gallagher was passed fit to play against Derby, and after the Rams went 1-0 up early on he was on the receiving end of a terrible tackle from Krystian Bielik, which earned the former Charlton man a red card. The Addicks couldn’t press home their man advantage, though, going further behind before Gallagher was fouled for a penalty Lyle Taylor converted. The 2-1 defeat leaves Charlton 19th in the table.

In League One, Richard Nartey played both festive games for Burton Albion, the first a 4-2 win at home to Tranmere, the second a 2-0 reverse at Accrington Stanley. They are currently ensconced in mid-table.

Josh Grant (pictured top) helped Plymouth to two victories in four days which sees Argyle rise into the League Two play-off positions. They registered an impressive 1-0 win at fellow promotion contenders Cheltenham on Boxing Day, before edging past bottom-placed Stevenage 2-1 courtesy of a last-minute winner. They also have at least one game in hand on the six teams above them ahead of the visit of top-of-the-table Swindon Town on New Year’s Day.

Nathan Baxter has continued his fine form for Ross County in the Scottish Premiership. First he helped keep high-flying Motherwell at bay until very late on after County had led and then been reduced to 10 men. Baxter made a number of good saves to keep his side ahead until two late goals condemned them to defeat.

The young goalkeeper then more than played his part as the Staggies earned a creditable 1-1 draw at St Johnstone, leaving them in eighth position in the table.
