Jimmy-Jay Morgan found the net in four consecutive games while Ted Curd emerged as the cup final penalty shootout hero, as we look at how the Chelsea players out on loan got on during March.
Jimmy-Jay Morgan – Peterborough United
The young forward picked up where he left off in February by continuing his strong form in League One. Having already netted against Northampton Town at the end of last month, he scored in each of Peterborough’s three fixtures in March to make it four goals in as many games.
He started with a late header at Leyton Orient, but it turned out to be merely a consolation in a 2-1 defeat. Four days later he helped open the floodgates with another header, though, putting the Posh two up just before half-time, on their way to a 5-0 win over Rotherham United.
Morgan then equalised from close range in a 1-1 draw at Wimbledon, leaving Peterborough reasonably comfortable in mid-table. His goals tally for this first full season in senior football now stands at 13, with 11 coming in League One, of which more than half have arrived since the start of February.
Omari Kellyman – Cardiff City
Kellyman started all five of Cardiff’s games in March, moving from the wing to the centre-forward’s role for the latter four. However, despite an impressive 4-0 thrashing of Exeter City, that was their only victory of the month, as two draws and two defeats saw the Bluebirds give up top spot in the League One table.
Ted Curd – Boreham Wood
A good month for Curd in the National League helped Boreham Wood win four of their six games to remain well placed to make the promotion play-offs. The keeper particularly impressed in a 3-0 victory over Gateshead, registering his ninth clean sheet of the season and his long kick forward providing the assist for the opening goal.
There was even a winner’s medal for the 20-year-old, as his crucial save gave Boreham Wood victory in the National League Cup final. Having fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with West Ham United Under-21s, thanks to an injury-time equaliser, the final was decided in an epic penalty shootout.
Both teams converted their first eight kicks, before Curd kept out the Hammers’ ninth and allowed Boreham Wood to net the winning penalty and become the first National League side to win the competition.
Aaron Anselmino, David Fofana, Mike Penders – Strasbourg
A busy month for Strasbourg saw the French club competing across three fronts. March started with them booking their place in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France with a 2-1 win over Reims thanks to a pair of penalties, the second awarded for a foul on Fofana.
The striker’s performances off the bench saw him handed his first start for Strasbourg in their next game, a 0-0 draw with Auxerre in Ligue 1 featuring a Penders' clean sheet, and his second came in a 3-2 win over Nantes at the end of the month.
Between those two games was another clean sheet for Penders in Ligue 1, in another goalless draw with Paris FC, while the keeper and Fofana both featured over the two legs of a 3-2 aggregate win over Rijeka in the UEFA Conference League last 16. Anselmino was not involved for Strasbourg due to injury.
Kendry Paez – River Plate
Paez made his first start for River Plate on the right wing as the Buenos Aires club began the month with a 2-1 win at Huracan, courtesy of an 85th-minute winning goal, shortly after they were reduced to 10 men.
Following that full debut, the Ecuadorian international then retained his place in the line-up for a more straight-forward 2-0 home victory over Sarmiento. After a shaky start to the Torneo Apertura when River Plate managed just one point from their first four games, they have now won four of their last five and sit second in the table of their 15-team group.
Nicolas Jackson – Bayern Munich
A mixed month for Jackson started well, with a goal and an assist in back-to-back games. The striker was fouled for a successfully converted penalty and then found the net himself from close range in a 4-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach. In his next game – the first leg of Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Atalanta – Jackson finished a quick counter-attack to score and teed up the final goal, as the Germans ran riot in a 6-1 victory.
However, in his next appearance, the Senegal international was sent off just before half-time – the first of two red cards Bayern received in a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. That mean Jackson was suspended for their final Bundesliga game of March, although he did come off the bench as they completed the job in Europe with a 4-1 second-leg win over Atalanta.
Axel Disasi – West Ham United
Disasi played every minute in league and cup for West Ham. A 1-0 victory at Fulham followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Manchester City briefly took the Hammers out of the Premier League relegation zone, although a loss to Aston Villa means they end the month with a one-point margin to Tottenham Hotspur and safety. The defender also helped West Ham reach the FA Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling London derby victory, beating Brentford on penalties after a 2-2 draw in 120 minutes.
Tyrique George – Everton
The winger made two substitute appearances in the Premier League in March, as Everton mount a late push for European qualification. The first came in a dominant 2-0 home win over Burnley – the Toffees’ first victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for three months – before two late goals condemned them to defeat away at leaders Arsenal. George was ineligible to feature for Everton against Chelsea.
Dujuan Richards – Leicester City
The Jamaican winger made the third senior appearance of his career since completing a loan to Leicester in January, coming off the bench to replace Jordan James in the Foxes’ 3-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers. They remain one point from safety in the Championship relegation fight.
Ishe Samuels-Smith – Swansea City
Samuels-Smith returned to action off the bench for Swansea, coming on at left-back when they hosted Championship leaders Coventry City. Unfortunately the damage had already been done by that point, after three goals in 11 second-half minutes saw the Swans suffer a 3-0 defeat.
