Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor paid tribute to the impact Matt Beard had in the English women's game after it was announced the former Blues manager had passed away at the age of 47.
Beard's death was announced on Saturday and ahead of Chelsea's Women's Super League fixture against Leicester City on Sunday, a minute’s silence was held at Kingsmeadow.
A wreath was also placed on the centre circle by Chelsea's head of women’s football, Paul Green, alongside his Leicester City counterpart, Lee Billiard.
Beard helped shape Chelsea Women during his three years in charge (2009 to 2012) and laid many foundations prior to Emma Hayes' arrival. He also guided the Blues to our first Women's FA Cup final in 2012.
Ahead of kick-off on Sunday, our Bompastor paid a heartfelt tribute to Beard, with whom she shared the touchline last November when we faced Liverpool.
‘It's a bit of a shock, so sad,’ she said. 'It’s really emotional. I think, as you just mentioned, he did a lot for Chelsea. He had deep relationships with most of the staff and players, and yeah, he's one of my colleagues.
'He made such a big impact in the women’s game in England. He was known as a good manager but also a really good person. He had some deep relationships with some Chelsea staff and players, so it's eally heartbreaking
'It’s a really difficult moment. My thoughts are with his whole family.'
