With the European transfer window now closed, following on from the domestic deadline prior to the start of the Premier League season, the official Chelsea website rounds up all our departures and loan deals completed this summer, plus a couple of permanent additions to the squad...

Pulisic and Kovacic arrive

It was announced in January that USA international Christian Pulisic would be joining the Blues, though the 20-year-old was swiftly loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season. However, the winger finally linked up with Frank Lampard’s side during our pre-season tour of Japan and has featured in all five of our matches so far this campaign.

Mateo Kovacic turned his loan move into a permanent one from Real Madrid in July, signing a five-year contract.

Deadline day switch for David Luiz

For the third time in his career, David Luiz switched clubs on deadline day, this time moving across London to Arsenal. The move brought to an end the Brazilian’s Chelsea career, which had spanned seven seasons across two separate spells, and six major honours including that memorable Champions League triumph in 2012.

Hazard departs on a high

A week after his brace in Baku helped us to Europa League glory, Eden Hazard completed his move to Real Madrid following seven wonderful years at Stamford Bridge. The brilliant Belgian left west London with 110 goals in 352 appearances and six major honours.

Strikers switch

Alvaro Morata completed a transfer back to Atletico Madrid in July. The forward had been due to spend the 2019/20 season on loan in the Spanish capital before the two clubs agreed to make it a permanent switch.

Gonzalo Higuain returned to parent club Juventus having spent the second half of last season on loan in SW6.

Cahill moves on and Green hangs up his gloves

Gary Cahill joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer after seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

Goalkeeper Rob Green announced his retirement from playing at the end of May.

Other permanent transfers

Jay Dasilva, Kasey Palmer and Tomas Kalas all made permanent moves to Bristol City following successful loan spells at Ashton Gate in 2018/19.

Torino triggered an option to buy in Ola Aina’s loan deal and signed the 22-year-old on a permanent basis, while Metz and Leganes did the same with Victorien Angban and Kenneth Omeruo respectively.

Academy striker Daishawn Redan joined Hertha Berlin, Kylian Hazard left for Cercle Bruges and goalkeeper Eduardo signed at Braga.

Todd Kane ended his 18-year association with Chelsea and signed for Championship side QPR, while fellow Academy graduates Marcin Bulka (PSG), Bradley Collins (Barnsley), Fankaty Dabo (Coventry City), Josimar Quintero (Espanyol B), Ruben Sammut (Sunderland), Kyle Scott (Newcastle) and Martell Taylor-Crossdale (Fulham) all departed.

Jared Thompson, Joseph Colley and Renedi Masampu were released by the club.

Loans

Ethan Ampadu moved to the Bundesliga on loan until the end of the 2019/20 season, joining RB Leipzig where he will play in the Champions League group stage against Zenit St Petersburg, Benfica and Lyon. Lewis Baker also headed to Germany with a loan agreed at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Davide Zappacosta returned to Serie A with Roma, with Mario Pasalic also in Italy this season at Atalanta.

Tiemoue Bakayoko completed a loan move back to Monaco, while Danny Drinkwater remains in the Premier League with a switch to Burnley.

Danilo Pantic will spend the season in Hungary playing for MOL Fehervar, while Victor Moses continues at Fenerbahce after agreeing an 18-month stay in Turkey at the start of the year.

Brazilian midfielder Nathan has extended his loan at Atletico Mineiro until January

There will be six Chelsea loan players featuring in the Championship this season, all for different clubs. Conor Gallagher crossed the capital to Charlton Athletic following an impressive 2018/19 in which he was named our Academy Player of the Year.

Izzy Brown joined newly promoted Luton Town, Trevoh Chalobah went to recently relegated Huddersfield Town and Jake Clarke-Salter headed to Birmingham City.

After a productive second half of last season at the Madejski, Matt Miazga extended his stay with Reading for another campaign. Dujon Sterling secured his first taste of second-tier football with a loan at Wigan.

There were maiden loans for Luke McCormick to Shrewsbury Town, Juan Castillo at Ajax and Richard Nartey with Burton Albion.

Nathan Baxter heads to Scotland for a season with Ross County, Josh Grant returns to the south-west to join Plymouth Argyle until January and Jacob Maddox joins Tranmere Rovers.

Charly Musonda rejoins Vitesse after his time there last season was hampered by injury, and he will be joined there by keeper Jamal Blackman who was also injured for much of 2018/19. Ike Ugbo will also play in the Netherlands this term at Roda JC.

Three further loans were agreed before the European deadline. Baba Rahman joined Real Mallorca in La Liga, Kenedy moved to Getafe and Lucas Piazon signed for Portuguese top-flight club Rio Ave until the end of the 2020/21 season.
