As we prepare to take on the south Londoners, we look at how it has gone in the past and at capital clashes so far this season…
Back in October the Blues ran out 2-1 victors at Selhurst Park to hand Graham Potter his first victory since taking the tiller. Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring early but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang marked his Premier League debut for the Blues with an equaliser. Returning to his on-loan stomping ground, Conor Gallagher delivered a last-minute winner into the top corner.
The Blues could register our first home and away league ‘double’ of the season this weekend. It is a feat Chelsea have achieved against Palace in each of the past four Premier League seasons since 2018/19, and previously in 2014/15, 2004/05 and 1997/98. The only old Division One season in which the Blues won at the Bridge and at Selhurst Park was 1971/72. The most doubles in a single season the Blues have ever managed was 12, first achieved 12 in 2004/05 and matched in 2016/17.
The west Londoners’ biggest win against the south Londoners at the Bridge was recorded in October 1998 under player-manager Gianluca Vialli. Hermann Hreidarsson opened the scoring and Marcus Bent scored a consolation but the game was a 6-2 rout in west London’s favour. Vialli netted twice, matched by the man he took himself off for – Tore Andre Flo - with Franco Zola and Dennis Wise also weighing in.
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace – Derby day again
This is the second of three all-London league games for Chelsea’s men’s team spread over 22 days and, like the overall Premier League standings, the Blues are in the middle of a table we generally top.
Patrick Vieira’s side currently harbour the worst record of any club in the capital’s local derbies, and have conceded more than two goals per match thanks to conceding seven without replay in their last two. The problem is compounded by the fact such meetings constitute almost a third of their league fixtures.
