On Sunday Chelsea Women travel to the west for our second away fixture of our Barclays Women’s Super League campaign against Bristol City Women and here we look at the game details…

WHEN AND WHERE

The match takes place at Stoke Gifford Stadium in north Bristol and kick-off is at 3pm.

THE FORM

Second-half goals from Bethany England and Guro Reiten gave Chelsea Women our first win in the Continental Tyres Cup group stage when we welcomed West Ham to Kingsmeadow last weekend. England, who had been working tirelessly upfront, finished smartly after taking a long-range pass from Magdalena Eriksson in her stride on 50 minutes. The second goal came from a Reiten corner which although was announced as the Norwegians’ first Chelsea goal, appeared to have been punched into the net by the Hammers goalkeeper.

The Blues have so far picked up four points out of six in the WSL. We won our opening fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge thanks to a magnificent early goal from England and then we travelled to Brighton and Hove Albion where we had to settle with one point in a 1-1 draw. It was a frustrating afternoon on the south coast as the Blues had a number of goal scoring opportunities, but failed to make them count. We were trailing from behind in the closing stages of the match when Brighton’s Aileen Whelan smashed her effort through the Chelsea defence and into the far corner. However, Adelina Engman finished calmly from close range in stoppage time to ensure we came away with a point, which was the least we deserved.

The Vixens most recently played Championship side London Bees in the Continental Tyres Cup, a 3-0 victory. Goals from Carla Humphrey, Ebony Salmon and Abi Harrison secured the three points for Bristol. They opened their WSL campaign with a draw against Brighton and Hove Albion and then lost 2-0 away to Everton, who are currently top of the table.

CHELSEA V BRISTOL HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

The Blues have played Bristol 12 times since the Women’s Super League was established back in 2013, and our first encounter resulted in our only loss to the Vixens. Bristol’s Stoke Gifford Stadium brings back special memories for Chelsea Women Supporters after we clinched our second Women’s Super League title in the 2017/18 season with a comfortable 2-0 win in May. Drew Spence opened the scoring with a header, just as she had done when the two sides met at Kingsmeadow on the opening day of the campaign, and the clincher came late on from Jonna Andersson.

They were also our opponents for our first game of the 2017/18 season, which just so happened to be our maiden game at Kingsmeadow. The Blues settled in perfectly in our new KT1 home having secured a brilliant 6-0 victory, with Spence netting the first goal at our new stadium. Maren Mjelde bagged a brace and Fran Kirby, Eriksson and Gilly Flaherty also hit the target.

Last term, the Blues had to settle for a goalless draw when we made the trip west despite dominating the game for long spells. However, a thumping 6-0 victory followed on our home turf with both Kirby and England scoring a hat-trick apiece. It was a perfect start for the Blues courtesy of two goals inside of five minutes from our forwards. Kirby scored the first with a typical predatory finish, which was swiftly followed by a tidy effort by England. A wonderful curler by Kirby made it 3-0 at half-time. There was more of the same after the break, with England converting a cross from Ramona Bachmann and then Kirby completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot. England followed suit with a thumping header to cap off a commanding performance from Emma Hayes’ side.
