Remembrance Day

As we mark 75 years since the end of the Second World War, Chelsea FC Women will be supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal at Sunday’s match. The Blues will be wearing special-edition match shirts with a poppy on it and all shirts will be signed by the players and donated to the Legion for auction after the game.

We will also be honouring those who have lost their lives in conflict across the world with a minute's silence prior to kick-off.

The form

Chelsea last played on Tuesday night in the Continental League Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. The Blues made it two wins out of two in Group B after recording a 2-0 victory against our London neighbours. Erin Cuthbert opened the scoring on the 70th minute against a well-drilled Spurs side when she smashed home from 25-yards out and German midfielder Melanie Leupolz doubled our advantage when she converted from the spot following a handball in the box.

On Sunday it will be four weeks since we were last in Women’s Super League action. We recorded an important win against fellow title contenders Manchester City at Kingsmeadow which finished in a 3-1 victory. Our regular penalty taker, Maren Mjelde, calmly converted from the spot in the final stages of the first half following a handball, then 10 minutes after the break, Sam Kerr slotted home a pin-point cross from Kirby. It looked as though we were destined for a nail-biting conclusion against our rivals when City forward Chloe Kelly pulled one back for our visitors from the penalty spot, however, Kirby sealed the victory with a confident finish.

Everton have had a blistering start to the 2020/21 season having won six, drawn one and lost two in all competitions. Their two defeats have been against Manchester City, with the latest fixture being last weekend against City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The match finished in a 3-1 defeat after extra time. French international Valerie Gauvine netted Everton’s only goal and the game was 1-1 with 10 minutes of extra time remaining, but late strikes from substitutes Georgia Stanway and Janine Beckie saw City seal victory.

Chelsea v Everton recent head-to-head record

The Blues have already met the Toffees this term having travelled to Goodison Park at the tail-end of September for the 2019/20 FA Cup quarter-final, a tie that was originally scheduled for March before the coronavirus pandemic brought a premature conclusion to the women’s domestic season. It was a narrow 2-1 defeat for us as Everton recovered from the concession of an early Erin Cuthbert goal to earn a place in the semi-finals.

We did not meet last season as our first Women’s Super League game in December was postponed as Everton’s pitch was frozen and our home fixture was not fulfilled due to Covid-19. Back in the 2018/19 season, we went up against Sunday’s opponents on three occasions, twice resulting in victory and the other in a goalless draw. We progressed to the next round of the FA Cup that year courtesy of two second-half goals from Drew Spence and Hannah Blundell. Spence finished off a well-worked counter-attacking goal just after the hour mark to open the scoring before Blundell tapped home from close-range in added time to seal the victory.

In the home WSL fixture of that campaign, we cruised to a comfortable 3-0 triumph at Kingsmeadow and the tone was set early on by Bethany England who tucked away a finish after only six minutes. But we had to wait until the final third of the game for the scoreline to reflect our dominance. Spence made it 2-0 on the hour and then Blundell's curler from outside the box put the game out of Everton's reach. The away fixture of that term finished in a frustrating goalless draw. Spence hit the crossbar late on and Fran Kirby also fired wide as we failed to make the breakthrough.

Next up for the Blues

Another big game follows next Sunday as Chelsea travel across London to go head-to-head with Arsenal in the Women’s Super League. The London derby kicks off at 2.30pm and is live on BT Sport.
