THE FORM
Chelsea’s WSL game away to Manchester United was postponed on Sunday due to the extreme weather conditions, along with every other fixture in the league.
This means the Blues last played 10 days ago and we recorded our largest victory of the term when we thumped West Ham United 8-0 at home. Our supporters were not short of entertainment as six different Chelsea players found their names on the scoresheet.
It took us just seven minutes to open the scoring courtesy of a Maren Mjelde half-volley and the Blues’ lead was doubled shortly after when Bethany England slotted home with ease. Sophie Ingle scored a header to ensure we went into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The fourth goal came soon after the interval when Erin Cuthbert unleashed a power left-footed strike that flew into the net. Two more goals came in the space of five minutes either side of 60 minutes when England and Mjelde added their second with simple finishes. We didn’t stop there as late goals from Ramona Bachmann – who opened her account for the season – and Emily Murphy added the finishing touches to a relentless performance.
Birmingham, who sit third from bottom on seven points, have not had a game since Sunday 26 January as two of their fixtures against Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion were postponed. Their last game was the fourth round of the Women’s FA Cup and Birmingham progressed to the next round by beating Championship side Sheffield United 3-0. Harriet Scott broke the deadlock with a headed effort and Lucy Staniforth doubled Birmingham’s lead minutes later when she fired home. A stoppage time goal from Scott sealed their FA Cup victory.
CHELSEA VS BIRMINGHAM CITY RECENT HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
The Blues put six goals past our opponents without reply in this season’s away fixture. Ji So-Yun and Millie Bright both scored a goal apiece, while both England and Drew Spence bagged a brace.
A spectacular free-kick from Ji opened the scoring minutes into the match, Bright doubled our lead with a well-timed run and finish. The centre-back then turned provider on the stroke of half-time with a world-class pass into England, who finished wonderfully from close-range. Spence added two quick-fire goals within six minutes of the restart, the first was tucked away with her right foot and the other was with her head. Our No.9 England netted the sixth with just under an hour left of play when she poked the ball into the far corner with ease.
The outing before this was in January 2019 and the match resulted in a narrow 3-2 loss, Chelsea’s last league defeat. The Blues went ahead early on at Kingsmeadow thanks to a Cuthbert diving header. However, the visitors turned the game around with two goals out of nowhere either side of half-time and it took a free-kick from our No.22 to draw us level deep into the contest. Ellen White, now at Manchester City, popped up to volley a last-gasp winner for Birmingham.
The away league fixture last term was frustrating as a dominant performance from Hayes’ side was not rewarded with three points – thanks largely to Ann-Katrin Berger, who used to play for our opponents. The highlight of the German's afternoon was a magnificent save to deny Blues legend Karen Carney from the penalty spot as the match finished goalless.
