Chelsea Women are looking to finish the year strongly when we welcome Reading to Kingsmeadow this Sunday for our final Women’s Super League assignment before the Christmas break.

The Blues have enjoyed a great run of form with eight consecutive league victories, which have seen us create a three-point lead at the top of the table going into the last match before we press pause on domestic football until January.

Our previous league outing saw us run out 8-0 winners against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium last weekend. Jessie Fleming and former Reading star Fran Kirby scored twice alongside strikes from Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr, Niamh Charles and Bethany England.

We followed this up with a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday. Guro Reiten’s second-half penalty, which went down as a goalkeeper own goal, cancelled out Caroline Weir’s first-half finish leaving the sides to share the spoils in Group A.

The visit of Reading marks the halfway stage of the season and having pulled off two impressive results against Liverpool and Tottenham in the previous two matches, the Blues know we will have to be on top of our game to get the desired result in front of the television cameras.

When and where?

We host Reading at Kingsmeadow in the Women’s Super League this Sunday 11 December, with kick-off scheduled for 6.45pm (UK time)

The form

We enjoyed a strong November in the WSL with back-to-back wins against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The icing on the cake saw the coaching staff celebrate the WSL Manager of the Month award, while Erin Cuthbert took home Goal of the Month for her strike against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. We kick-started December with a resounding 8-0 victory at Leicester City.

After eight straight league victories, we occupy first place in the table with 24 points, having won eight and lost one of our opening nine league matches. During this time we have scored 28 goals, conceding six in the process leaving us with a goal difference of +22.

Reiten has been in inspired form of late, she was directly involved in five goals last time out against Leicester (one goal, four assists) She has now been involved in more Barclays WSL goals than any other player this season (11 – two goals, nine assists)

As for our opposition, Reading will be in confident mood having drawn against Liverpool before defeating Tottenham in their previous two league encounters, putting them in 10th place on seven points, seven clear of the drop ahead of their trip to the capital.

Amy Turner’s first-half own-goal sealed all three points for Reading in their last match at home to Tottenham, not to mention a clean sheet that will work wonders for the belief in the dressing room going into Sunday’s match.

Chelsea Women vs Reading Women recent head-to-head record

Our previous league meeting with Reading came in April of last season, where we produced a clinical display in front of goal and secured a 5-0 victory at Kingsmeadow.

England and Kerr netted second-half braces that afternoon after Fleming had opened the scoring in the first 45 minutes.

In the reverse fixture away from home last December, Reading came out on top with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a fourth-minute strike from Deanne Rose, and the Blues will be keen to avoid a repeat of this one year later.

Next up for the Blues

We return to UEFA Women’s Champions League action this Friday 16 December when we travel to Albanian champions Vllaznia for our penultimate group stage fixture on matchday five.

We are looking to secure our qualification for the knockout phase, having won three and drawn one of our four matches to date to establish a three-point lead at the top of Group A.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5.45pm (UK time) and the match will take place at the Loro Borici Stadium, where the Blues will play for the very first time.
