Chelsea duo Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher were both in England’s starting line-up to face Brazil, while two Blues youngsters took a step closer to qualification for the European Under-17 Championship.

A typical Conor Gallagher performance full of energy was one of the positives for England, as they were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in a friendly at Wembley.

There was also a promising sign for Blues supporters as Ben Chilwell started for the Three Lions in this high-profile friendly, having returned from injury as a late substitute in Chelsea’s last match, a 4-2 FA Cup win over his former club Leicester City.

It was arguably Gallagher who caught the eye at Wembley of the two Chelsea players involved, though, as he repeatedly pressured the Brazil defenders into errors and looked for opportunities to drive forward out of midfield.

Chilwell and Gallagher were both withdrawn in the second half with the match seemingly heading for a stalemate, after Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins had fired England’s best chance over the bar and Raphinha likewise failed to hit the target from a good opportunity for Brazil.

However, the game was settled with 10 minutes remaining, when 17-year-old substitute Endrick tapped in a rebound from close range after Jordan Pickford had denied Vinicius one-on-one.

Chelsea’s England contingent, with Cole Palmer also in the squad for this international break but not involved tonight, will be hoping for a better result when they return to Wembley to host Belgium on Tuesday, in their last match before Gareth Southgate names his squad for Euro 2024.

There was better news for our younger English players, as Ollie Harrison and Ryan McAidoo helped the Under-17s make it two wins out of two in the elite stage of qualifying for this summer’s European Championship in Cyprus.

Harrison started the game in midfield and featured for the full 90 minutes as England raced into an early two-goal lead against Hungary and never looked back.

The goals continued to flow in the second half, with McAidoo being introduced from the bench for the last 10 minutes, shortly before the Young Lions completed the scoring in an emphatic 5-0 victory at St George’s Park.

That leaves England joint top of their group alongside France, who they face in the final match of qualification on Tuesday evening.
