Mykhailo Mudryk’s magnificent goal against Arsenal on Saturday reminded us of some other fine chipped efforts by the Blues in recent years.

There are few skills in football quite as elegant as a finely measured chip from the flank with just the right amount of power and flight to dip over the despairing fingertips of a goalkeeper and find the far corner of the net.

In scoring his first-ever goal at Stamford Bridge, Mykhailo Mudryk showed his awareness and deft touch to conjure up a strike which will live long in the memory of Chelsea fans.

The Ukrainian is far from alone, however, in finding the net for the Blues with a magnificent lob over the goalie from a tight angle.

Gianfranco Zola v Everton, April 2003

Gianfranco Zola could not have conjured up a more magical effort for the last of his 80 goals for Chelsea on Easter Monday 2003.

As he chased down a long ball on the left edge of the Everton box, the Italian maestro produced a deft lob with the outside of his right boot which completely caught out the advancing Richard Wright as it flew over his head into the unguarded net.

Jesper Gronkjaer v Monaco, May 2004

A year after netting his memorable goal against Liverpool which sealed our spot in the Champions League, Jesper Gronkjaer produced another wonderful left-footed effort against Monaco in the semi-finals of the competition.

Whether he meant to cross or shoot from near the right touchline was a moot point as the Danish winger sent the ball soaring past goalkeeper Flavio Roma into the angle between post and crossbar to revive hopes of a comeback win against the Ligue 1 side.

Frank Lampard v Barcelona, October 2007

On Halloween night in 2007, Frank Lampard produced a freakish effort at Camp Nou which he later insisted that he meant to score with. Who are we to doubt his intention?

With the Blues trying to get back on level terms with Barcelona in the second half of the Champions League tie, a chance appeared to be lost when Lampard miscontrolled Claude Makelele’s lofted pass over the top of the Barca defence.

However, the midfielder chased the seemingly lost cause and, from a near impossible angle on the byline, he swivelled 180 degrees and floated the ball over the head of Victor Valdes into the opposite corner of the net.

Didier Drogba v Hull City, August 2009

For 91 minutes, Hull City did everything to deny Chelsea an opening-day win at the Bridge, but that wasn’t enough thanks to a wonderful bit of magic from Didier Drogba.

The Ivorian didn’t appear to have too many options when he chased down Deco’s pass near the left byline in stoppage time, but his controlled chip with his left boot had just enough height and dip to loop over Boaz Myhill and send the Bridge into delirium as we came from behind to win 2-1.

Erin Cuthbert v Real Madrid, November 2022

Kingsmeadow witnessed a goal for the ages last year when Erin Cuthbert somehow found the net from near the corner flag in a Women’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Racing down the right flank, the Scot produced a perfectly weighted, angled shot, which left the Spanish side dumbfounded as it flew home to seal a 2-0 win for Emma Hayes’ side.
