While Chelsea's 1-1 draw with London City Lionesses was not what Sonia Bompastor had wanted ahead of kick-off, there was one major positive to take from the match as Chelsea Academy graduate Chloe Sarwie made her first start for the club.
The left wing-back made her Blues debut at the age of 16 at home to Paris FC in the Women's Champions League earlier this season.
She then signed her first professional contract in February of this year, and had made a total of five substitute appearances for the senior side before she was picked in the starting XI against London City on Saturday.
Sarwie played 63 minutes before being replaced by Naomi Girma, and the 17-year-old Chelsea Academy graduate was delighted that she had been handed the opportunity to play with the first team.
'It means everything to me,' she said afterwards. 'I’ve been working so hard throughout the academy, and to finally be part of the first team, sign my contract and get my first start, I’m forever grateful for that. I just need to keep working hard and keep showing that I should actually be in that starting XI.'
Sonia Bompastor notified Sarwie that she would be starting the match on the morning of the game, but despite the size of the occasion, she was unfazed by the task in front of her.
Making a perfectly timed tackle on the edge of the penalty area early on in the contest, the Blues supporters could easily see that the youngster is full of potential.
'I found out at breakfast this morning,' she continued. 'Sonia called me down and said that I would be starting today, and I was full of excitement. I felt like it was my time to show people what I can do. Honestly, I did that today, and I’m very grateful.
'I wasn’t nervous at all. It was just excitement and being prepared for that moment. As soon as I got a touch of the ball, I felt like I was expressing myself and felt calm and collected. That’s when the tackle came out, and it was all instinctive.'
