Christian Pulisic and Matt Miazga were part of the USA side which beat a Jamaica team containing Michael Hector…
The United States men’s national team produced their performance of the Gold Cup tournament so far with Pulisic scoring the second and third goals in a 3-1 semi-final win in Nashville. The 20-year-old, who will be joining up with the Chelsea squad after the competition, started the match with Miazga brought into the defence in one of four changes from the quarter-final. As he regularly is, Michael Hector was in the backline for Jamaica who had reached the two previous finals of the Gold Cup, which is contested by the countries of North and Central America and the Caribbean region.Pulisic set up a chance with only three minutes played and his side took the lead just six minutes later through Schalke’s Weston McKennie. The USA domination continued when Pulisic hit the post with a free-kick but then there was a lengthy delay to let a thunderstorm pass. After 90 minutes play continued with the Chelsea winger back to being the one causing havoc with his moves down the left.Miazga’s distribution from the back was also causing some problems for Jamaica in what was a repeat of the previous final in 2017, but it was Pulisic who made it 2-0 with 52 minutes played with a straightforward finish after the keeper had pushed a save across goal.
Jamaica pulled one back to make it 2-1 to the States on 69 minutes when Shamar Nicholson breached their net for the first time in this tournament, but with three minutes of the 90 left, Pulisic made the victory safe when he scored his second. After his shot was initially saved well by Andre Blake who plays his club football in the MLS, Pulisic regained possession and hit the net with his follow-up attempt.
In the final the United States will face Mexico who beat Haiti in their semi-final. The showpiece match takes place on Sunday in Chicago with the States looking for their second Gold Cup in a row and seventh overall. Mexico are 10-times winners.
