As Academy matches take a pause during the international break, we spoke to Under-21s head coach Filipe Coelho to get his insight into the benefits of this period, whether the boys are training at Cobham or away on national duty.

As the international break unfolds, 26 players from our Academy have been selected to represent their countries. Those players, from the Elite Squad down to Under-16s level, will compete in matches for various nations across Europe and beyond.

The countries represented include Sweden, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, the USA, Finland, Poland and England.

Coelho has highlighted the benefits of this two-week break from the Premier League 2 campaign, noting that it provides a valuable opportunity for individual players to enhance their performance and develop their skills, whether they are working at Cobham or away with their nations.

'During the international break, we can focus more on each player's growth,' the Portuguese coach explained. 'The break allows us to concentrate on refining technical skills and improving tactical understanding.

'We tailor training sessions to meet specific developmental needs. Even though players are away on international duty, their individual development remains a priority.

'Tailored training and support ensures their growth continues as they integrate with their national teams.

'Performing well at Chelsea brings them closer to national team spots, making this break a significant moment for their development and future opportunities.'

Coelho emphasises that the two-week international break is crucial for players to recover physically and reset mentally. Taking time away from a busy schedule helps players rejuvenate and prepare to return with renewed energy and focus.

'The international break gives us a chance to focus on individual conditioning and recovery. It's an ideal time to strengthen the body and prevent injuries, ensuring players return to competition even fitter and stronger.

'Players need to maintain their fitness and recovery protocols while on national duty, and clubs should co-ordinate with national teams to uphold these strategies.

'As I have said before, mentality is a huge factor if you want to play successful football. We also focus on mental aspects during this time. The pressure of games can take a toll, so we incorporate mental toughness training to be ready for the next challenges.'

Although many members of Coelho’s squad have been called up for international duty, some players remain at Cobham for the ongoing training sessions with the head coach and prepare for the return of domestic action in our upcoming Premier League Cup game against Brentford.

'For the players who stay at the club during the international break, it’s an opportunity to continue training and focus on their individual development,' added Coelho.

'We’re also organising friendly fixtures to keep them sharp and competitive. Additionally, the Under-21s are being prepared to step up to the senior team if needed. We continue to be proactive.

'This time is crucial for the players to stay motivated, improve their skills and be ready for the next phase of the season.'
