Cole Palmer believes he and his Chelsea team-mates once again proved their character after a stirring second-half fightback saw the Blues defeat Real Betis to win the Conference League final.
We were behind at the interval in Wroclaw following an early strike from Abde Ezzalzouli, but a dramatic and emphatic turnaround followed.
Palmer was instrumental to that as he fashioned Enzo Fernandez’s equaliser with a fine cross and repeated the trick five minutes later to enable Nicolas Jackson to steer the ball home from inside the six-yard box.
More was to come in the final ten minutes. Jadon Sancho, introduced from the bench, whipped home our third of the evening before Moises Caicedo, recently voted our Player of the Year, capped off the win with a stoppage-time strike.
Lifting the Conference League trophy capped off an important four days for the Blues, during which we also secured Champions League qualification by winning away at Nottingham Forest. And Palmer says our two achievements are indications of the mental strength within the squad.
He said: ‘It’s a good feeling for us and the fans. We picked up the intensity in the second half and put on a good performance.
‘I think we showed on Sunday we could go to a tough place and win and tonight, even when we were losing, I felt we showed good character again to come back.’
Palmer wasn't registered for the league phase of the Conference League but was brought into the squad for the knockout rounds and featured in all but one match en route to Wroclaw.
His importance was highlighted through his two assists, and the England international was delighted to lift his first piece of silverware with the Blues.
‘In the early stages [of the Conference League] it wasn't too bad to not be involved because the team had to go to Kazakhstan, and you can ask Tosin, they didn’t enjoy it with an eleven-hour tour flight! But to come into the tournament and now win it, it’s an amazing feeling.’
