Cole Palmer felt that Chelsea deserved more following a tough 3-1 defeat in our UEFA Champions League curtain-raiser against Bayern Munich.
It was always going to be a hard night's work at Allianz Arena, but the Blues rose to the challenge and competed well during a first half in which Bayern went ahead through an own goal and a Harry Kane penalty.
On his 100th appearance for the Blues, Palmer hit back with an impressive strike into the top left-hand corner and ensured we went into the interval with momentum.
However, the home side took greater control of the game in the second period and claimed a third goal, again from the right boot of England international Kane.
Palmer did find the back of the net again late on, only for VAR to rule out the goal due to a marginal offside. As such, Cole was left feeling that we were owed more for our performance in a fierce atmosphere.
‘I feel like we deserved more, to be honest,’ Cole reflected after the game in Germany.
‘We started well and I think we had early chances to score, but when you make mistakes at the highest level, then it’s hard to come back into the game.
‘There was a bit of a lack of concentration and not managing the moments correctly, but I feel like we showed we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. I think we deserved more.’
The Blues' No.10 believes our display across the 90 minutes showcased that we can challenge the biggest sides in this competition, which head coach Enzo Maresca emphasised before kick-off.
He continued: ‘The manager said to us before that he knows we can go toe-to-toe with anyone, and I think we showed that tonight despite the result.
‘It’s a good learning curve for tonight and to be back in the competition is nice, so we just need to kick off from here.’
As we look ahead to the rest of the competition, the 23-year-old explained that we’re not in the Champions League to make up the numbers.
Cole added: ‘We’re not in this competition for it to be a learning curve for us. I feel like we showed tonight that we can compete and we want to do as best as we can.’
