Cole Palmer was overjoyed to score on his first start at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League since August this season, and believes the 2-0 victory over Everton is exactly what we need as we work our way through the congested festive schedule.

We returned to winning ways with victory over the Toffees at Stamford Bridge, with first-half strikes from Palmer and Malo Gusto enough to see off the threat of David Moyes's side.

Our No.10 etched his name onto the scoresheet after 21 minutes, breaking the deadlock with a trademark left-footed finish into the bottom corner, before wheeling away to celebrate in front of the Shed End. Cole then watched his team-mate, Gusto, double our advantage, tapping home Pedro Neto’s low-driven cross from close range.

The Blues held firm throughout the second half despite not adding to our tally, and it’s fair to say Cole was both equally delighted and relieved to find the back of the net and secure an important victory, as we head into the busy festive period.

‘It was hugely important to get back to winning ways,’ Cole said, speaking after full-time.

‘It meant a lot to score as well. I’ve been out for a while, probably the longest I’ve ever been out, so I was itching to get back out there with the team, so to start and score was a nice feeling.

‘We’ve obviously had a difficult few games, and it’s harder than people think, a game every three days. It’s a lot of travel and it’s difficult, so to get the win is great.’

Head coach Enzo Maresca explained during his pre-Everton press conference that he will continue to manage Cole’s return, and Palmer echoed his words.

‘I didn’t want to rush back too soon and then get injured again, and I’m still managing it, so it’s just about getting better each day,’ he explained.

‘I enjoyed being back out there, and I’m still not near 100 per cent in terms of fitness and sharpness, but I’m getting there, and hopefully I’ll be there soon. I don’t want to do too much too soon, but I’m getting there.’

The offensive-focused Cole also wanted to praise the work of his defensive-minded team-mates, as they secured consecutive clean sheets.

‘The defence again was amazing, and they’ve kept a few clean sheets now, which is really good,’ he added.

‘This year, the league has been a lot more difficult; everyone is beating everyone. It’s not as easy, but we will always keep going.’
