Cole Palmer says Paris Saint-Germain being labeled favourites to win the Club World Cup final was used as extra motivation by the Blues to prove doubters wrong and win the trophy.

Palmer was at his decisive best against the Champions League winners, scoring twice in the first half and then teeing up Joao Pedro for our third goal of the contest.

The England international was handed the Player of the Match award for his display and also received the Golden Ball, given to the standout player at the Club World Cup.

Palmer felt the Blues' performance was 'spot on' at MetLife Stadium and highlighted the game plan devised by Enzo Maresca as being key to our triumph.

'Everyone was doubting us,' the England international said. 'We didn't mind that, we just used that as extra motivation, and we worked through any trouble we faced out there.

'I thought we were spot on, especially the gaffer. He put together a great game plan. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible, so I had to repay him by scoring the goals.’

Our success in New Jersey brought the curtain down on a campaign that has lasted almost twelve months. Champions League football has been secured in that time, in addition to the Conference League and Club World Cup trophies.

It's why Palmer says the Blues are making strong progress under Maresca. Our No.10 said: ‘He (Maresca) is building something special, something important.

'We’re a young team and everyone has talked a lot about us all season, but I feel we’re going in the right direction.

'I try to do my job every time I go onto the pitch and hopefully I can continue to do that.’
