Levi Colwill believes working closely alongside Brazilian veteran and experienced defender Thiago Silva is only going to bring the best out of him.
The Cobham graduate has just signed a new long-term deal with the Blues after joining us at Under-9s level.
He is keen to work alongside some experienced Premier League defenders, two of which are also English and one who is routinely venerated as one of the best defenders of his generation: Thiago Silva.
‘Working with Reece [James], Thiago [Silva] and also Chilly [Ben Chilwell] they are great, world class players. Working with them, hopefully I can learn so much,’ Colwill said after his contract was signed.
‘They have won so much, so hopefully I can come in and they can trust me to be part of the team and use me when they can.’
Thiago Silva has 18 years on Levi, and turned professional a year before he was even born. The Brazilian continues to belie his age: a player who has some sort of defensive creative pulse, always radiating good ideas, with the intelligence on the grass to match.
‘Especially working with Thiago, one of the best defenders in the world, I can learn so much from him,’ Colwill said. ‘Hopefully, I can pick up little tricks and also be there to ask questions when I need things. That will be the main thing for me, growing as a player and defender.’
Perhaps Colwill will line-up alongside Thiago Silva when we host Liverpool next Sunday 13 August. But Mauricio Pochettino has first challenged the young defender to earn his right in his side.
One thing for sure is that if Colwill is indeed given the chance to start his first match in SW6, it will be a moment he will never forget.
‘Being at Stamford Bridge, it is an amazing stadium with exciting players. I can’t wait to be there for our first game against Liverpool, it will be a great time to be there. The fans are going to love this season and we are going to have Stamford Bridge rocking.’
