Toni Rudiger, Olivier Giroud and Gianfranco Zola popped up midway through the family catch-up taking place by video call to surprise Blues fans Paul and Tony. The two share a particularly special bond after Tony donated a kidney to his brother in 2018 following emergency surgery.

The surprise follows on from Frank Lampard speaking recently by video call with NHS heart surgeon and Chelsea supporter Dr Panos Theodoropoulos, who is working on the frontline response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, last week Mason Mount got in touch with senior Blues fan Maureen for a catch-up via video link. They discussed what they are both missing at the moment, baking and even Mason’s love life!

During the call, which can be watched in the video above, Zola interrupts the quiz from his home in Sardinia to check in on the family. Paul and Tony are deemed particularly vulnerable during the current coronavirus pandemic due to their previous kidney treatment but both are in good health and even better spirits after seeing the Chelsea legend join the virtual gathering.

The questions soon switched from trivia to asking our former number 25 about his opinion on that age-old debate – Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard?

‘Two fantastic footballers, probably some of the best midfielders England has produced, but I have to go for Frank of course,’ answered Zola.

‘I saw him at the beginning growing up and you know he was unbelievable because he could play, he could score, he was very complete.’

Later in the call, after the arrival of Rudiger, Paul talks about his health and jokingly dismisses the German’s attempt to play down football’s significance.

‘I’m good,’ he says. ‘My brother Tony gave me the kidney but we’re all good. I’m very lucky I’ve got a good family and a good brother.’

‘This type of situation shows that football is not so important - the most important thing is health,’ replies Rudiger.

‘Football is always very important - don’t worry about the kidneys!’ Paul jokes back.
