Three Chelsea players spending the season out on loan are competing at the FIFA 2022 World Cup, and here we look in detail at the national sides of Romelu Lukaku, Baba Rahman and Ethan Ampadu…

Belgium

Romelu Lukaku has 68 goals in 102 games for the Red Devils and is set to appear at his third World Cup, having helped a star-studded Belgian side to a bronze medal four years ago.

The rest of the squad contains plenty of familiar faces, including former Blues Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, Michy Batshuayi and Thorgan Hazard.

Ghana

Former Blue Tariq Lamptey is in the squad. Thomas Partey captains.

What is Ghana's World Cup history?

Ghana are appearing at their fourth World Cup. They reached three in a row between 2006 and 2014, making the round of 16 in Germany and then going one better on Africa soil four years later.

They were agonisingly knocked out of the quarter-finals on penalties by Uruguay in 2010 having missed a spot-kick in extra-time after Luis Suarez’s infamous handball. That will no doubt be a big talking point before the teams meet again in the group stage.

Wales

Ethan Ampadu has been a regular since making his Wales debut in 2017 and has already accrued 37 caps. This will be his second major international tournament. He, Joe Rodon, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale are the only players not plying their trade in England, Wales or Scotland.

Goalkeepers: Wayne Hennessey (Nottingham Forest), Danny Ward (Leicester City), Adam Davies (Sheffield United).

Defenders: Ben Davies (Tottenham) Ben Cabango (Swansea City), Tom Lockyer (Luton Town), Joe Rodon (Rennes, on loan from Tottenham), Chris Mepham (Bournemouth), Ethan Ampadu (Spezia, on loan from Chelsea), Chris Gunter (AFC Wimbledon), Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest), Connor Roberts (Burnley).

Wales v Iran, Al Rayyan, 25 November, 10am

Wales v England, Al Rayyan, 29 November, 7pm

How did Wales qualify?

Wales finished behind Belgium in their qualification group but qualified for the play-offs as one of the six seeds. There they beat Austria 2-1 in the semi-final in Cardiff, before edging past Ukraine 1-0 in the delayed final in June, sparking pandemonium in the Welsh capital (Ampadu is pictured celebrating top).

What is Wales' World Cup history?

This is Wales’ second World Cup. In 1958 they reached the quarter-finals, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by eventual winners Brazil.

They do however have recent tournament experience, making it all the way to the semi-finals of the 2016 Euros, and reaching the round of 16 in last year’s delayed competition.
