Marc Cucurella believes Chelsea showed this team is fighting together with the way they bounced back from the disappointments of defeat to Nottingham Forest and Liverpool’s early opening goal to earn a point at Anfield.
We came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw away at Liverpool on Saturday, recovering from an early set-back when Ryan Gravenberch gave the home side the lead after six minutes, levelling the scores half-an-hour later when Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick went all the way through the penalty area and into the back of the net.
That got the Blues back in the Premier League points after a six-game absence - and against another team fighting for European qualification, at a stadium which has always been a difficult place for teams to visit.
After the game, Cucurella was encouraged by the fighting spirit shown by the team to bring a hard-earned point back to west London while putting the previous result out of our minds, just in time for our trip to Wembley for the FA Cup final.
‘I think the reaction of the team was really good after the last performance,’ said the Spanish international. ‘I think we showed again that if we want to fight, if we play together, we are a really good team.
‘Hopefully we can grow in confidence after this draw. I think maybe at some points we deserved the win, but we need to build on this.
‘We have a massive game next week. We need to take the positive from Saturday and prepare good for the game and arrive in the best condition.’
Although he is optimistic that the draw with Liverpool saw Chelsea take a step back towards the right path, Cucurella doesn’t shy away from the fact this has been a difficult period for the Blues during a disappointing run of results.
For all that he is happy with the reaction shown to come back after going behind early on, he knows it is a situation we have found ourselves in too often recently.
‘It's a thing that we need to improve. These last couple of games, we concede always early. We need to switch on, but I think after that, the reaction from the team was really good.
‘The first half was clear control for us. We created a lot of chances, we scored, and the second half was a bit 50-50. But I think in general we did a really good effort and hopefully we can build after this performance.
‘The effort from the team was really good. We dominated the game in a lot of time. We had a lot of control and hopefully we can continue in this way, in these last games.
‘We have a really good team and we have good players with a lot of qualities. It’s true that we've been in tough moments, but we need to stick together. It's not easy to be 1-0 down after 10 minutes at Anfield and the reaction from the team was really good.’
Of course, as pleased as the Blues are with a point at Anfield, it was still two less than they had gone to Merseyside hoping to come away with. Next time out drawing won’t be an option, when we take on Manchester City in the winner-takes-all FA Cup final.
‘I think on Saturday we played a good game,' Cucurella added. 'It's not enough because we want always to win, but we have now a few days to prepare for the game. The final is a final, and the most important thing is to win this trophy.
‘We need to believe in us. A lot of the players are the same players that last season won two trophies, so the quality is there.
‘We need just to adjust a few things, with confidence, and prepare good for the game because I think the team always in these games performs well. So hopefully we can play a really good game and win this trophy.’
