As one of the senior members of the Chelsea dressing room, Marc Cucurella knows he has an important role to play on and off the pitch.

Only Tosin Adarabioyo is older than Cucurella, who has been virtually ever present in the Chelsea and Spain teams in the past couple of years. During that period, he has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world.

It is no wonder, then, that he feels he can pass on advice to the likes of Jorrel Hato and Estevao Willian, 18 and 19 respectively, but with huge futures ahead of them. That the Dutchman, who replaced him at West Ham late on, is a left-back will only accelerate that process.

‘Hato made his debut and I’m very happy for him,’ said Cucurella. ‘He’s a very good player, very young, and hopefully I can help him with his adaptation here.

‘Estevao is very young but very mature. In theory he was starting on the bench, but in five minutes he needed to be ready. He had to listen to the tactics and everything.

‘He had an amazing game. He had an opportunity to score at the end, but he has a lot of quality and he can improve a lot, so hopefully he can continue in this way.’

Cucurella also highlighted the impact Joao Pedro, another new signing, had on his second league appearance for the Blues. The fresh additions to our squad make Cucurella believe there is lots to look forward to in 2025/26, and he knows how significant strength in depth will be.

‘We had five different goalscorers [at West Ham] which shows the team is very ambitious and has a lot of quality,’ the Spaniard pointed out.

‘We have new players who bring a lot of energy and quality. It’s about teamwork and we all showed we can bring something to the team.

‘All of us need to be important during the season. We have improved and we need to keep working.

‘We need to continue in the way we ended last season. We need to go step by step, game by game, we have an amazing season in front of us and hopefully we can do great things.’
