Marc Cucurella was full of praise for the unity and fighting spirit shown by his Chelsea team-mates as we battled back from two goals down to triumph 3-2 against West Ham United.
In an incredible 90 minutes-plus of Premier League football at Stamford Bridge late on Saturday afternoon, the Blues did what we had never done before. After trailing 2-0 at half-time in the Premier League, we took all three points at the final whistle.
A brilliant second-half performance saw the Chelsea players refuse to accept defeat and keep pushing for a way back into the game. Joao Pedro’s header gave us a lifeline before Cucurella headed in an equaliser from close range.
There was still more to come, though, as Enzo Fernandez swept in Joao Pedro’s cut-back in added time to seal what had seemed an unlikely Chelsea victory. It was the second time in four days we had fought back in the second half to win 3-2, having been trailing 2-1 at Napoli at the break in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.
‘We are very happy,’ said Cucurella, after the celebrations had died down at the end of the game. ‘We work for moments like this. We showed the mentality of the team.
‘We went 2-0 down at half-time and there were doubts and probably not too many people believed in us. Then we speak during the half-time, we go with a lot of energy and we come back, so we are very happy.
‘Sometimes when you are losing you lose confidence, but in both games we stayed in the game, we did things right and we have a lot of quality, so if we stick together and we fight together these things can happen.’
Cucurella was one of three players to come on as a substitute at half-time and make a big impact, as Liam Rosenior turned to his bench for reinforcements.
The Spaniard got on the score sheet after two subs had combined for our first goal, Wesley Fofana providing the cross for Joao Pedro, and then the Brazilian turned provider for the winner. Marc was quick to underline that the comeback was a team effort, though.
‘At the end we are a team, the most important thing is winning the game,’ insisted the defender. ‘I think at the moment in a lot of games, not only today, the players who come on from the bench have made a difference.
‘It was difficult. West Ham played a really good first half as well, so we have to give credit to them.
‘All together we want the same end to the game, which is to get the three points, and we are really happy. After being 2-0 down at half-time we showed our mentality to play a really good second half. We stick together in tough moments and we deserved this win.
‘In the end we are a team. I think we have a very strong squad, we have a lot of talent, and today we showed that.
‘Now we have three more points and we have to continue in this way because at the end of the season all of us will have our moment, our opportunity, so we need to stay together.’
