Erin Cuthbert says Chelsea must use the disappointment of defeat in the Continental Tyres League Cup final to fuel the rest of their season.
The Blues missed out on the first major trophy of the season yesterday (Sunday) after an extra-time goal from Stina Blackstenius ensured Arsenal lifted the League Cup once again.
Emma Hayes's side appeared to have taken the lead in the 21st minute through a powerful drive from distance from Mayra Ramirez, but VAR ruled out the goal for a Cuthbert handball. It was a blow that seemingly set the tone for the rest of our day.
Despite the painful loss and frustration of missing out on silverware, Chelsea still have plenty to play for after the international break, with the Women's Super League, the Women's FA Cup, and the UEFA Women's Champions League still up for grabs.
And Cuthbert, who wore the captain's armband for the majority of the League Cup final, insists the Blues can use the disappointment felt to drive us forward in our quest for three trophies between now and the end of the season.
'We're disappointed because we had a couple of big chances [in the League Cup final],' Cuthbert reflected. 'But we need to use this now to kick on after the international break.
'We can then all look each other in the eye, reflect inward, and then kick on with the bit between our teeth.
'The international break is a good time for reflection. We've been in each other's hair for the last month – it has been really intense with a lot of games. So it's nice to have a reset now and have a change of scenery.
'But when we come back, we will still be competing in three competitions. So we're still lucky. We'll hit the reset button and last year, after we lost the Continental Cup final, it fuelled us to go on and win more trophies. We're hoping it is the same again.'
While Cuthbert was unable to lift the League Cup at Molineux, she did not believe it was down to a lack of endeavour from those in blue, who she felt left everything out on the pitch.
The game was Chelsea's eighth in what was a demanding March and the Scottish international accepts the recent demands of our grueling schedule may have played a part in the final outcome, especially given the game went to extra time.
She said: 'I think it was a game of small margins. Super close. We had a few chances and ultimately they took theirs. But I can't fault the efforts today. We gave everything for 120 minutes.
'We've been through the mill the last couple of weeks but everyone left it all out there and we just came up short today. I think we could have stolen it in extra time, but fatigue starts to set in and that's when the legs get tired.'
