Erin Cuthbert can’t wait for the chance to show what she and this Chelsea side can do when they perform at their best, as we host Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday evening.

The Blues remain undefeated across all competitions this season and are well placed in the Champions League, recovering from the opening draw at Twente in the league phase to register emphatic back-to-back wins over Paris FC and St Polten.

Next up comes arguably the biggest challenge yet, taking on Barcelona, the side who have knocked us out of this competition in the last three campaigns on their way to reaching five consecutive finals.

For Cuthbert, though, it is a challenge she is relishing: ‘I just love testing myself against the best players in the world, and that’s what they are,’ she explained, speaking to the media alongside head coach Sonia Bompastor in the official UEFA pre-match press conference.

‘Of course I have a good appreciation for the midfield three because they’re my direct opponents. Patri’s [Guijarro] most likely going to be missing and I think she’s a big asset to that team, but obviously you’ve still got [Aitana] Bonmati and [Alexia] Putellas, who are top players. So I’m looking forward to the match-up and testing myself against them.’

The Scottish midfielder is no stranger to these encounters, as this is the fourth year in a row we have faced Barcelona in the Champions League.

Last season’s encounters ended in disappointing defeats, but Erin is determined to show our true quality this time around, as well as getting back to winning ways after two draws in the Women’s Super League.

‘I want to get one over them every time, of course,’ she continued. ‘When you play for Chelsea, such a big club, you want to put your best foot forward and make sure you perform.

‘I think that’s the thing over the last two games we played against them earlier this year, we didn’t perform at our best level. So the best thing we can do tomorrow is just make sure we put in a performance that we’re all super proud of.

‘In our last couple of games, performances haven’t been at the level we want, but I think we all have to look as individuals where we can be better first and foremost. The first thing you do is think: “what can I be doing more”.

‘Then we come together when we have the team meetings and discuss how we can be better as a team, but the first thing is everyone has reflected on where they can do better as an individual, and I think it will come together.’

In addition to the quality of opposition we face on Thursday evening, Cuthbert’s excitement is also boosted by the magnitude of the occasion, competing on the biggest stage in the Champions League under the floodlights at Stamford Bridge.

‘I love playing at Stamford Bridge. It’s a different feel, a different aura, when you’re approaching the game, when you’re stepping out the grass is just so green with the contrast to the lights.

‘When you’re a young kid you grow up dreaming of playing in big moments like tomorrow night. Chelsea versus Barcelona - it doesn’t get much bigger than that.’
