Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall feels Chelsea have met every challenge throughout our UEFA Conference League campaign head on, but knows there is one final hurdle still to overcome.
Our last game of the season brings the chance of silverware. If all goes well in tonight’s Conference League final in Poland, there are only 90 minutes – give or take extra time and penalties – remaining between the Blues and a European trophy.
We have failed to win just one of our 12 matches in the competition proper so far, and that came in the second leg of the quarter-final, the loss to Legia Warsaw proving irrelevant given our 3-0 aggregate lead from the first game.
However, Dewsbury-Hall knows we can’t underestimate the challenge posed by final opponents Real Betis, if we want to claim victory in the Conference League and complete our collection of continental honours.
‘We've gone into every game treating opponents with a lot of respect and you need to do that,’ said the midfielder. ‘I feel we've played really well in the tournament and done every job we needed to do. We only have one more job left to complete now.
‘We know we can put our names in history and be the first club to win every European trophy. People will say it’s not the biggest European trophy, but a trophy is a trophy. If anyone snubs their nose at a trophy, then I'm not sure where their motives are.
‘It's hard to win trophies because multiple teams and players are fighting for it. We’re excited, and I’m excited. It would mean a lot to be involved. Three years ago I was in the semi-finals with Leicester and we missed out.
‘I’ve gone one better this time and it's a great feeling. It’s a massive occasion and the sort of occasion you want to play in. I'm just going to embrace the experience and, fingers crossed, it will be a good one.’
The 26-year-old has been heavily involved throughout our Conference League campaign, being the only player to feature in every match since we began in the qualifying play-offs against Servette back in August.
That means the competition accounts for 14 of Dewsbury-Hall’s 30 appearances during his debut season with Chelsea, while only Christopher Nkunku has netted more than Kiernan’s four European goals for the Blues in 2024/25. What better time for a fifth than in Poland tonight?
‘It's been a great opportunity for me to get a good handful of games,’ he reflected on his Conference League campaign so far. ‘That's what I want and I'm happy that I've been able to make an impact in the tournament.
‘I know that, if the opportunity comes in the final, then I'll do the same as I have been doing. I feel like I’ve popped up with a couple of important goals and I wouldn’t mind getting one more!’
