Few players have possessed the innate footballing ability of Eden Hazard. He was a genius on the pitch; a true joy to watch. And our brilliant Belgian has rightfully become the latest inductee into the Premier League Hall of Fame.
Created in 2020, with the first inductions taking place a year later, the Hall of Fame honours individuals who have enjoyed exceptional success and made significant contributions to the Premier League since its inception in 1992.
Hazard becomes the sixth Chelsea legend to be inducted, alongside Petr Cech, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, and has received an engraved medallion marking his induction and a £10,000 donation made by the Premier League to a charity of his choice.
'I grew up playing football for fun, with my brothers in the back garden, but my dream was always to play at the highest level,' Hazard said.
'It means a lot to join the Premier League Hall of Fame. I’m very proud to join this group of players and I think we could make a good squad!
'I just wanted to have fun on the pitch and entertain the fans who bought tickets or watched on TV. Being recognised in this way is special for me and my family. My parents were both footballers and now my children love the game too.'
Hazard arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2012 from French side Lille. He had been courted by several of European football's most prestigious clubs, but memorably revealed his decision to the world on Twitter: 'I'm signing for the Champions League winner.'
A two-time Ligue 1 Player of the Year, Hazard had a burgeoning reputation to live up to. He delivered – and then some.
Hazard scored nine goals in his first Premier League campaign and was included in the top-flight's Team of the Year. He also helped the Blues claim the Europa League, his first piece of silverware with Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge as head coach in the summer of 2013 pushed Eden to new heights. Fourteen Premier League goals were struck in his second top-flight campaign, and he was named Premier League Young Player of the Season and, for the first time, Chelsea Player of the Season.
Better was to come during the 2014/15 season as Hazard spearheaded our charge to the Premier League title. He again struck on 14 occasions, but his performances were decisive and consistent throughout the campaign.
He swept up several end-of-season awards, being named Premier League Player of the Season, Chelsea Player of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year, and FWA Footballer of the Year.
No trophy was lifted the following campaign – although Hazard did famously strike to end Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of winning the Premier League – but the Belgian was hugely instrumental in 2016/17 as we reclaimed the top-flight title.
He scored 16 times in the Premier League and was a creative hub as Antonio Conte's side raced clear of the chasing pack to secure the trophy alongside the League Cup. Hazard was, for the third time, named Chelsea Player of the Year.
Further success came in the form of the FA Cup in 2017/18 before what, sadly, proved Eden's last season at Stamford Bridge. It was arguably his best, and he bowed out in style – the mark of a true showman.
Hazard scored 21 times in all competitions, his best goalscoring campaign, with 16 of them coming in the Premier League. He also claimed 15 assists in the top flight; hard proof that there was a hugely unselfish part of his game.
His 352nd and final appearance came against Arsenal in the Europa League final. Hazard was outstanding that night, creating a goal for Pedro and scoring twice to take his tally for the Blues to 110 in all competitions.
One of the hardest of goodbyes followed, but Eden's place in Chelsea history and in the hearts of Blues supporters was firmly cemented.
