There is a quick turnaround for Chelsea Under-21s this evening, as our EFL Trophy campaign begins with a trip to Hayes Lane to face League Two side Bromley.

The 7.45pm kick-off marks the Blues' first fixture in the competition this season, with further matches against Charlton Athletic and Cambridge United to come in Southern Group C.

Filipe Coelho’s side head into the match following a heartbreaking stoppage-time defeat to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League 2 at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.

Despite a bright start and an early goal from Reiss Denny, our lead was overturned by a late brace from Harry Whitwell, whose second goal arrived in the dying moments and condemned us to a 2-1 defeat.

Our focus now shifts to the EFL Trophy and Under-21s assistant head coach James Simmonds has emphasised the team's desire to make a strong start in the competition.

'We’ve had time to reflect on our recent defeat and we’re hungry to get a positive result,' Simmonds said. 'I felt we played well against West Brom but there were imperfections we need to iron out.

'Back-to-back games allow us to get back into our rhythm and regain the confidence to get the three points and the victory.

'This competition is a great experience for the boys. Facing senior teams gives us an opportunity to see our progression and compare ourselves to the level required for players aiming to go on loan.

'We know it’s going to be a physical test, but we’re ready for it. Our strengths lie in being tactical on the ball, switching between physical and skillful play.'

The EFL Trophy provides academy sides with the chance to compete against professional clubs – and for our young Blues that means a taste of senior football and a greater mental and physical challenge.

However, there will be EFL experience in the Chelsea ranks this time around. 'We’ve got players like Harvey Vale and Alex Matos, who have played in senior leagues, so I’m sure they’ll pass on some of their experience,' said Simmonds.

'But we also need to use our own experience in handling the physical side of the game, being smart with it, and then showing our quality by moving the ball quickly and showcasing our talent through the technical aspects of our play.'

The Blues gained valuable experience against men's teams during pre-season and, coupled with players returning from loans, Simmonds believes the team has the confidence and mentality to secure the three points.

'During pre-season, we had friendlies against senior sides, which were great. For younger players, it’s a fantastic way to see where they’re at, as many of them aspire to play senior football.

'It’s a good test to see if they can handle the physicality and dominate opponents who have played numerous senior games. It gives a clear indication of their level both individually and as a team.

'We know what to expect in this competition. In the past, we’ve done quite well, but no Premier League Under-21s side has won it yet. This is an opportunity for us to go as far as possible, and we’ve got real talent in this group.

'As a coach, I enjoy seeing where our players stand in their development. We know many of them are capable of eventually playing in the Football League and this tournament provides the perfect platform to show that.'
