Mark Robinson has reflected on last night's win against Peterborough United by reiterating that it is the mentality of the players that has allowed them to go on this unbeaten run.

Our Under-21s were simply terrific in last night’s 4-2 victory over Peterborough in the Papa Johns Trophy round of 32.

Four top-quality goals proved to be the difference between the two sides as our development squad march on in the competition.

A Malik Mothersille brace and two exceptional finishes from Cesare Casadei and Ben Elliott were enough to separate us from the League One side.

Quality in abundance

Robinson was proud of his team’s performance and reiterated that it was the collective effort which stood out the most.

‘It was a very pleasing performance all round,' he told us after the game. 'Not only were there many standout individual performances, the players were excellent as a collective carrying out the off-the-ball aspects that are crucial in any game, let alone against a good quality League One side.

‘Most of our work is always about us but we obviously watched them against Tottenham in the group stages and saw how dominant they were in that game. It was imperative the players not only matched them physically but that we were brave enough on the ball to recognise how to break their press with quick movement and excellent detail.’

This is clearly a sign of the development being made off the pitch in training as the Posh struggled to handle the pace and precision that we continued to show throughout the contest.

On top of the performance, the quality of the goals stood out to the development squad coach as he was pleased with how good his side’s finishing was.

‘The quality of our goals was obviously very pleasing but there were also plenty of other opportunities to score on the back of fine team moves,' he added.

Strong mentality

Our young Blues are now 11 games unbeaten after our latest win stretched the impressive undefeated streak. It is also four wins in the last five games and Robinson is happy with the strong mentality that has been built throughout the squad to maintain this form.

‘The players are obviously enjoying the unbeaten run but they just need to remember where it stems from and why it is happening,' he said.

‘Momentum is a wonderful thing and it's not a fluke. It comes from a relentless attitude day-in, day-out. That can be lost a lot quicker than the time it takes to achieve it.’

Chelsea will find out their last-16 opponents when the draw is made this Thursday 24 November at 4.30pm. Fixtures will take place in the week commencing 12 December.
