An exhilarating Women’s World Cup is edging towards its conclusion and eight of our Chelsea stars have reached the semi-finals, where they find themselves on the cusp of a place in Sunday’s final.

We have been heavily represented at the tournament Down Under with 19 players being called up to represent their countries. Thirteen Blues progressed to the last 16, with only two knocked out before the quarter-finals. Now, eight are just one victory away from a shot at world domination.

Spain will take on Sweden in the first semi-final on Tuesday, while the second semi-final has thrown up a mouthwatering clash between Australia and England, which sees the tournament co-hosts take on the reigning European champions.

Let’s take a closer look at our Blues involvement…

Tuesday

Zecira Musovic and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd have been influential in helping Sweden reach their fifth World Cup semi-final. Having moved through the group stages with relative ease, they disposed of defending champions the United States in the last 16 and saw off Japan at the quarter-finals.

During the game against the United States, Musovic made 11 saves, a single-game World Cup record for a goalkeeper who kept a clean sheet. She was in fine form once again during the victory over Japan which sealed their place in the semi-finals.

Sweden have experience at this stage of the tournament, while Spain have never made it this far in what is their third appearance in the competition. The sides meet for the very first time at a World Cup in Auckland on Tuesday 15 August, with kick-off scheduled for 9am (UK time).

Wednesday

Six Chelsea players meet when co-hosts Australia take on England as Sam Kerr and Millie Bright will be hoping to lead their respective countries to a World Cup final. Hannah Hampton, Jess Carter and Niamh Charles are in the Lionesses squad, while Lauren James serves the last of her two-game suspension.

Australia have reached the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time, overcoming France in a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory at the quarter-final stage. Meanwhile, England came from behind to see off Colombia in their quarter-final tie, which setup a tantilising match against the Matildas.

Sydney is the venue for this one on Wednesday 16 August with kick-off set for 11am (UK time). The winners will face either Spain or Sweden in the final on Sunday 20 August, which also takes place in Sydney and will kick-off at 11am (UK time).
