With her fifth goal of the season in our 6-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at the weekend, Ellie Carpenter has already exceeded last season’s total of three. And it’s only November.
The wing-back, now in her second campaign with the Blues, has played a key role in the team’s success this season, starting in all but one of our 13 matches so far.
Last week, Carpenter came on at half-time against Roma in the Women’s Champions League with the scores locked at 0-0, scoring within six minutes of the restart. After the match, Sonia Bompastor explained there was some debate over whether or not her introduction was an attack-minded substitution.
‘It's funny, because I had a conversation with the technical staff,' said the head coach following the win over the Italian side. 'I made the final decision, and someone in my technical staff said: "But we need to score, and you are bringing on a defensive player"!
‘We laughed after the game because I said: "Right now she's scoring a lot of goals, so I don't know if she's more defensive or an attacking player”! It worked, so it's good. I was confident Ellie would create a lot in the second half.’
At the moment, Carpenter is covering enough ground down the right flank to be both. She scored against Charlton, but also won the most tackles (three) and made the most ball recoveries (12) of any player on the team.
‘I’m proud of the group,’ the Blues No2 said after the win at The Valley. ‘Our number one goal in this game was to get the three points and keep a clean sheet. We wanted to score, and it’s great to come and see so many different goal scorers. There are a lot of positives from Sunday that we’ll take into the next game.’
A deeper look into Carpenter’s stats shows her impact on the team this season. In the Women's Super League, the Australian has played the most minutes of any outfield Chelsea player (714), is ranked highest for big chances created (seven), has the most touches in the opposition box (56), possession won (46 times) and possession won in the final third (10). She is also second in the team for expected assists (2.79) and chances created (19).
Her numbers are not only high within the Chelsea side, but also league-wide. Only Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp of Manchester City plus Victoria Pelova of Tottenham Hotspur have had more touches in the opposition box than Carpenter’s 56. Only Hemp has created more chances than Carpenter in the WSL.
‘It feels really good,’ the wing-back continued after the win over Charlton. 'I'm just trying to do my best on the ball in every game, so I'm really proud of that.’
