The right wing-back took 16 touches in the opposition box throughout the contest – more than any other Chelsea player – and was delighted with the afternoon’s result.

‘It feels really nice to win today,’ said Carpenter. ‘The most important thing was a home win, the three points and a clean sheet.

‘Birmingham came out strongly, especially in the second half. We had to defend a lot there, but I'm proud of the team that we kept a clean sheet, and we kept to the game plan.'

The Australia international has garnered praise for her all-round performances this season, and she has a theory about why she has been standing out.

‘I'm just trying to bring my best every game and also every day in training to help this team achieve our goals,’ she explained. ‘Obviously, I’m now in my second season here at Chelsea, and in London, so I’m feeling a bit more comfortable and getting a little bit of a different role in this formation.

‘It allows me to get forward and attack a little bit more, so I’m really enjoying that freedom.’

After securing the three points at Stamford Bridge, Carpenter was keen to praise team-mate Melvine Malard, who she previously played with at Lyon, for scoring the goal that gave us some much-needed breathing space with 20 minutes to play.

Malard was brought on as a 63rd-minute substitute to make her first appearance for Chelsea in the Women’s Super League, and within eight minutes of coming on, she bagged her first league goal for her new club too.

‘We got that important second goal with Melvine,’ Carpenter continued. ‘I’m very happy for her to have her first minutes in the WSL for Chelsea and her first goal, so it's great for her, and also great for the team.

‘We always want to score more goals. But the fact that we're creating the goals and the goalscoring opportunities is good for us. Hopefully we can build on that. We have Champions League in midweek, and obviously Arsenal next weekend. If we keep playing well, performing well and creating those chances, I'm sure the goals will come.’

Chelsea Women investor Alexis Ohanaian was in attendance at Stamford Bridge on Saturday alongside his wife Serena Williams and their two daughters.

Carpenter was asked about her opinion of stars from other sports watching her and her team-mates play at the Bridge, and her response showed her passion for women athletes lifting each other up.

‘I think it's amazing,’ she smiled. ‘Women's sport in general is massive, and it’s great to see different athletes and legends at the game. It's really cool to have Serena present and bringing the vibes.’
