When Chelsea kick off against Manchester United in the Women’s League Cup final in Bristol next Sunday, Blues duo Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr will be thousands of miles away on the other side of the world.
The pair are currently on international duty, representing Australia in the Women's Asian Cup on home soil. Not only is there a trophy at stake for the winners, but the tournament serves as the qualification process for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The Matildas have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament after finishing second in their group, following their 1-0 win over the Philippines – with the only goal of the game scored by Kerr – a 4-0 victory against Iran and the 3-3 draw with South Korea, when Kerr scored once more.
The hosts will now face one of defending champion China and three-time winner North Korea on Friday 13 March, with those countries playing each other this morning UK time.
But while our Aussie pair are on the other side of the world, the Blues are preparing for another Women's League Cup final on Sunday 15 March.
The trophy-decider will take place at 1.15 am in Sydney but, speaking before she left for the Asian Cup, Carpenter confirmed she would be supporting her team-mates from afar.
She said: 'It'll be in the middle of the night, but if it's after one of our matches, I don't really sleep after games anyway so I will be watching it, cheering them on from far away.’
The Asian Cup will conclude with the final on 21 March, and the Matildas are hoping to use their home advantage to go all the way. When their participation in the tournament is over, Carpenter and Kerr will return to club football with plenty of high-stakes fixtures left to play.
The Chelsea number two thinks a win in the League Cup final will help keep momentum high as we advance into the crucial final period of the campaign.
‘I think if the team can win, it will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season,’ Carpenter continued. ‘It’s against Man United, who are obviously a top opposition. They're just in front of us in the league now as well. I think the cup games against them are really important.
‘And to get a trophy so early in the season is a massive confidence boost. It would also tick off one of the goals that we set out at the beginning of the season. Hopefully, the girls can get it done!’
