Ellie Carpenter admitted she was hugely disappointed to leave the Netherlands with only a point following our 1-1 draw with FC Twente but was pleased by one of the positives to come from our Champions League opener: the European debut of 16-year-old Chloe Sarwie.

The Australian put in a hardworking shift on the night, laying on the joint-most crosses (six) of any player in the team and completing the most final third passes (30) as she looked to create chances.

Her work spanned both boxes as she also completed two out of two tackles, made two blocks and won back possession on six occasions.

But we were only able to leave the Netherlands with a point and Chelsea’s summer signing praised our opponents for their work in keeping the Blues at bay.

‘We’re very disappointed with the result and also the performance,’ said Carpenter. ‘We had a lot of chances to convert, to get up early in the first half and also in the second half.

‘Credit to Twente, no game is easy in this Champions League. They were very organised defensively; they gave everything, and that’s what this new format is. Every game is hard, and they nullified us going forward and defended really well in a block.’

One of the positives for Sonia Bompastor’s side was a debut appearance for 16-year-old Sarwie. The teenager was introduced in place of Sandy Baltimore in the 73rd minute against Twente and went close with a shot that fizzed just over the crossbar.

After Sarwie’s impressive cameo, Carpenter is excited to see how she might progress further in the side.

‘She’s such a young, exciting player, and she’s so talented,’ Carpenter enthused. ‘I’m happy for her to get her first few minutes on the big stage in the Champions League. Hopefully, we can see more of her.’

With our first Champions League point on the board, Chelsea will now have to move on quickly, as we face an in-form Tottenham Hotspur side at Kingsmeadow on Sunday in the WSL.

A return to UWCL action will soon follow, with the next match against Paris FC to be held at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

‘We shift focus to the weekend for the league,’ continued Carpenter. ‘Also, we have in the back of our minds the Champions League game against Paris FC, and hopefully we can get back on top of things in this new format.’
