The No.26 shirt made famous at Chelsea by John Terry has a new owner, and Emi Martinez has promised to wear it with pride after joining the Blues from Aston Villa.

It was confirmed yesterday (Sunday) morning that Martinez had signed for Chelsea – and he made his debut in our eventful 4-3 victory over Brighton. Martinez made several crucial saves during his first 90 minutes as a Blue, as we made it two wins from two in the Premier League.

Ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge, Martinez was announced as our new No.26. He doesn’t take the privilege lightly, with only three other players – and most famously Chelsea legend John Terry – being assigned the squad number in the 21st century.

Martinez explained that he had spoken to our former skipper – Terry coached at Aston Villa during the goalkeeper's time in the Midlands – before taking on the famous shirt.

He said: ‘I remember using the 26 on loan a few times with previous clubs, and of course I knew John Terry famously had the 26 here.

‘John was someone I spoke to before I joined, and he said he was over the moon to have me here. From our time together at Aston Villa, he knows how hard I work and what I can bring to Chelsea. JT really helped me with my decision.

‘The morning I signed, I texted him and said, "I'm wearing your shirt, and I'm going to do it with pride."'
