This evening, Chelsea FC Women take on Arsenal in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and manager Emma Hayes has challenged her team to improve upon last weekend’s result by raising our levels in this London derby.

The Blues’ incredible 33-game unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League ended with defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. It was a disappointing afternoon at Kingsmeadow as the Seagulls ran out 2-1 victors but Hayes has full belief her team will produce a much better performance tonight.‘Obviously we’re hugely disappointed with the performance at the weekend but the setback is one that we accept – it always has to happen if you want to make progress.‘It’s fair to say that this is a team that has always reacted and responded well to the disappointing moments that happen within football.‘As I said to the players on Monday, I don’t want you to tell me you’re disappointed, I want you to show me because actions are crucial.‘For the whole group we have a level for ourselves and that bar is extremely high and our objective is making sure we reach those levels again.‘The important thing is to focus on what we expect for ourselves and disappointments are part of the job, they come with the territory but your response to the disappointments is what makes you.‘That’s why I always say the character of the team is special because I know what response I’m going to get regardless of the challenge I put forward and the focus is on attention, on our cohesion and on our spirit,’ Hayes continued.

After reflecting upon Sunday’s defeat, the Chelsea boss also pinpointed the areas for improvement, while insisting there is no added pressure going into this encounter.‘Intention, intensity, aggression and the selfless work you have to do was missing on Sunday.‘Making space for others, the behaviours that are required to move a team that is difficult to break down, you have to work extremely hard.‘People think attacking is the easiest things in football, it’s not, it’s one of the hardest and the work you have to do selflessly is crucial. I don’t think we done that well enough on Sunday.‘There is no pressure. Every game is a privilege to represent the badge and we have to put the badge first and do it justice.’Chelsea v Arsenal is never short of entertainment in the women’s game. It’s often a closely-fought fixture that comes down to fine margins and Hayes is not expecting anything less than that tonight.‘I will expect an Arsenal team that is hungry, they know they have to win the game, they are extremely aggressive and they are extremely direct and they have got attacking qualities to carve open any team.‘They played really well on Sunday versus City and I think they have got all their players back so we’re expecting a difficult game.’
