The next of our player-by-player reviews of the 2020/21 campaign focuses on a season of two halves for Tammy Abraham…

The striker had enjoyed a breakthrough 2019/20 season, as he netted 18 times in his first year in the Chelsea first team after graduating from our Academy and earning his chance by impressing on loan.

Excluding penalties, Abraham was the Blues’ highest scorer in all competitions for the second season running in 2020/21, and no-one netted more times in the Premier League from open play for us, but the majority of those goals came in the first half of the campaign, before a troublesome injury and increased competition for places reduced his opportunities.

Promising start

Despite new arrivals Timo Werner and Kai Havertz adding to the already stiff competition from Olivier Giroud for the central striker’s role in the Chelsea team, and Abraham not getting off the bench for our first game of the season, the then 22-year-old featured in our next 14 Premier League games.

It was when featuring from the start that he was most effective, getting six goals and an assist in those eight games, culminating in him scoring three times in two league games either side of Christmas, including a brace in the 3-0 win away at West Ham United.

Cup king

However, it was in the cup competitions that he produced his best form, especially after the turn of the year. Having already set up two and scored one in the 6-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley, Abraham appeared in five of our six Champions League group games, finding the net to complete our 3-0 home win against Rennes.

His goals also played a massive role in our run to the FA Cup final, scoring the second hat-trick of his Chelsea career to secure a 3-1 win over Luton Town in the fourth round, before getting the only goal of a 1-0 victory at Barnsley in the last 16. Those four strikes made him our top scorer in the FA Cup, with twice as many goals as any other Blue.

Disrupted conclusion

A heavy challenge forced Abraham off with an ankle injury in the first half of the Premier League win over Newcastle United and, although it initially looked like he had shaken it off, the problem returned to see him last just 45 minutes of our next game against Southampton.

As he continued to struggle to overcome the lasting effects of that challenge, the striker wasn’t back in contention for selection until April. With others having established themselves in the side during his absence, Abraham managed two substitute appearances during the rest of the season.
