Next to take centre stage in our end of season reports is Moroccan attacker Hakim Ziyech, who built on his first season at Chelsea by providing some crucial goals in 21/22…

It was a successful season for Hakim Ziyech, who scored eight goals, including our 500th European goal, which came against Malmo in our away Champions League clash with the Swedish side.

The 29-year-old held his own Goal of the Season competition at one point, with impressive strikes coming in a flurry of matches at the start of 2022.

Utilised very wide on the right-hand side of Thomas Tuchel’s attack, Ziyech can look back on a progressive and influential campaign in Chelsea blue.

A strong winter period

The Moroccan scored in three consecutive Premier League games in January and February, against Brighton, Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

His strikes against the Seagulls and then Spurs were both from long range, with the latter arguably one of Chelsea’s Goals of the Season, as he left goalkeeper Hugo Lloris rooted to the spot as he found the top left corner.

While his opener at the Amex in January only earned the Blues one point, the same cannot be said for his last-minute winner at Selhurst Park after we had just returned from Abu Dhabi and our Club World Cup triumph. Hakim had earlier put us ahead, however VAR ruled the goal out. Minutes later, Ziyech volleyed home a teasing Marcos Alonso cross to ensure we claimed three points.

Building on his first season

Ziyech scored eight goals in 2021/22, compared to his six goals in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge. All eight of these strikes came with his left boot, meaning 13 of his 14 goals for Chelsea have now come with his favoured foot.

The Blues did not lose a game in which Hakim scored last season, with six of these culminating in victory. Three were outside of the box, which were at Brighton, at home to Spurs and also away to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Ziyech scored the match-winner in three away trips in 2021/22, coming at Malmo, Watford and also away to Palace.
