Chelsea Women forward Bethany England says it will be an incredible experience to be back at Stamford Bridge when the Blues take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League today (Sunday).
The Blues are set to grace the turf at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 2019, when Tottenham were the visitors in the WSL for a London derby that attracted 25,000 people. England scored the winner that day with a wonderful solo effort which clinched a 1-0 victory and three valuable points.
Three years later, it’s a case of déjà vu as we face Tottenham at Stamford Bridge in the WSL once again. However, a sell-out crowd is expected to flock to the Bridge on this occasion for an eagerly awaited clash, as the WSL recommences after the international break.
England, who was the star of the show during our last outing at the Bridge, hopes Sunday will be a special day for everyone involved.
‘It’ll be an incredible experience being back at the Bridge again in front of our fans,' she says. Hopefully, we can make more good memories and come away with the three points.
'Everyone played their part in that game to get us the win. Obviously scoring a goal like that was amazing for me, not only to score at the Bridge in that fashion, but to get my season underway for goals that year.’
Apart from her goal, England remembers a sizeable crowd that day and a stern opposition in the shape of Tottenham, who made us work hard for three points which kick-started a season that would be cut short due to Covid.
‘I just remember it being one of the biggest crowds we’d gotten in. It wasn’t quite the sell-out we’d hoped, but Spurs gave us a tough game that day and we were chuffed to have got through the game with a win to start the season.’
England and Millie Bright are two players who have been at the club for all three of our competitive games at Stamford Bridge. England hopes the growth of the women’s game will lead to further opportunities to play at larger stadia.
‘I’ve been at the club almost seven years now in December, Millie doing a year longer than me. It’s crazy to think we’ve only played at the Bridge twice but hopefully now with the growth of the game, we get to play more games at bigger stadiums like the Bridge more frequently!
‘To add to this, we’re told this time the game is a sell-out, which again after the summer just shows how far the women’s game has come. It’s been a long building process, but we’re really able to get women’s football in the spotlight it deserves. I hope we give the crowd something to cheer about come Sunday.’
As the game grows, squads in the WSL are strengthening and the competitiveness in the league is increasing. England says our squad is brimming with talent and the goal is to work together to reach our full potential this season.
‘We’ve had many brilliant squads over the years, but as the league strengthens so does our squad. We have an abundance of talent in this squad, so the job is to make sure we all work in unison in the pitch to bring those qualities to life and play great football together.’
England’s full interview will appear in Sunday’s matchday programme, which includes a commemorative cover celebrating 30 years of Chelsea Women.
There are handful of hospitality tickets still available priced from £10
The game, which kicks off at 1pm, is live on BBC One.
