Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were in action for Argentina and Ecuador respectively as South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup continued on Tuesday evening.
Argentina made light work of the altitude in Lima to record a comfortable 2-0 victory over Peru, with Enzo involved in both goals scored by Lionel Messi.
For Argentina’s first on 32 minutes, Enzo carried the ball from halfway before finding Julian Alvarez to his left. The Man City player’s first-time pass was emphatically swept into the roof of the net by Messi from 16 yards out.
The same trio combined for Argentina and Messi’s second on the stroke of half-time.
This time Enzo found himself as the furthest Argentinean player forward, latching on to a pass from Nicolas Tagliafico in the inside left channel as the world champions patiently probed an opening in the Peru defence.
Enzo then had the presence of mind to cut the ball back, behind the retreating Peruvian defence. Alvarez dummied it and there was Messi once again to calmly sidefoot the ball into the net.
Argentina remained the dominant force thereafter, with Messi denied his hat-trick after a VAR check for offside.
Enzo completed the game in midfield as Argentina made it four wins from four in qualifying. They already have a five-point lead over Uruguay and Brazil in second and third, their opponents in November’s matches.
In Quito, Ecuador and Colombia drew 0-0 with Caicedo going close for the hosts early on. He rattled the crossbar with a vicious inswinging free-kick from a wide angle.
Ecuador remained on the front foot, with Caicedo stealing possession in midfield and picking out Kevin Rodriguez, who fired a shot against the inside of the post. Ecuador bemoaned their luck once more.
However, just after the hour, Colombia were handed a great chance to go in front after a push inside the box. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz stepped up and saw his penalty well saved by Moises Ramirez in the Ecuador goal. Colombia did then have the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Caicedo played the 90 minutes in Ecuador’s three-man midfield. The point leaves them in sixth place in qualifying ahead of fixtures against Venezuela and Chile next month.
