Enzo Fernandez lavished praise on ‘beast’ Marc Cucurella after our dominant 3-0 win over Barcelona, our largest margin of victory over the Spanish side in Europe.
Tuesday evening's win at the Bridge had all the hallmarks of a special night under the lights. That electric European atmosphere. Energy and enthusiasm. And, most telling, three goals for the Blues!
While the game took a while to break through the tactical opening exchanges, the tie sprung into life just before the half-hour mark, with Cucurella at the heart of things.
The full-back, who was awarded UEFA’s Player of the Match award, delivered a wicked cross that eventually landed in the back of Barcelona’s net after a mix-up between the defenders. Deadlock broken and from that point, the night belonged to Chelsea.
Fernandez had the perfect view of Cucurella's performance from the centre of the pitch and the Argentine believes it was the energy and drive of our Spanish left-back that helped set the tone for the evening.
‘Obviously, Marc is a beast,’ Enzo explained, speaking after our league phase victory over the Spanish champions.
‘Having a team-mate like him around day-to-day is very special, he’s very funny and always in a good mood.
‘Aside from that, he trains very well, always wants to improve and for us, it’s very important to have a defender of his quality.’
Our No.8 was equally crucial to our strong performance as, following Estevao Willian’s mesmeric solo strike, the Argentinian assisted Liam Delap to make it three at the Bridge – the striker’s first European goal – and the midfielder was pleased with how the Blues rose to the tactical challenge.
‘The truth is that we’re delighted with the result,’ he continued. ‘I think we put on a strong showing of our character, and as the minutes went by, we felt more and more comfortable in the match.
‘After Ronald’s (Araujo) sending off, Barcelona had to be more compact, which gave us more space, and that was when we were able to find the two goals at just the right time.
‘Their defensive line very high. We knew the spaces were in behind, off the shoulder and e were able to find our striker in space many times. That was the plan that [Enzo] Maresca prepared us for during the week. We improved as the game went on, and we ended up with a 3-0 win, which is an excellent result.’
The 24-year-old wouldn't get drawn on our chances in the latter parts of the competition, with the Blues’ focus solely on qualifying for the knockout stages and Sunday’s upcoming challenge against Arsenal in the Premier League.
‘We’re just taking it step by step,’ Enzo added. ‘We don’t put ourselves in the position of a contender, even if we represent Chelsea, a really big club. We have a great team, and we’re taking it one step at a time.’
