Enzo Fernandez scored a 92nd-minute winner to help Argentina complete a dramatic turnaround against Egypt and advance into the World Cup quarter-finals.
For much of the contest at the Atlanta Stadium, it appeared as though Argentina's hopes of retaining the trophy they claimed in 2022 were coming to an end.
Egypt had opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim headed home an excellent cross from Marwan Attia. Lionel Messi missed a first-half penalty – his second failure from the spot at the tournament – and La Albiceleste trailed at the interval.
Mostafa Ziko netted a second for Egypt, only for VAR to intervene for a foul in the build-up to the goal. However, the winger powered home a finish in the 67th minute and Egypt appeared set to cause a significant World Cup shock.
However, with 11 minutes to play, Messi delivered a cross and the unmarked Cristian Romero headed home. Momentum was with Argentina and an equaliser quickly arrived, as Gonzalo Montiel teed up Messi inside the penalty box, and he drilled a shot in off the crossbar.
It appeared as though the game was headed for extra time. Yet in the second of seven additional minutes, Lautaro Martinez collected a pass forward, whipped a cross into the box, and Fernandez escaped the attention of Ibrahim to guide a header into the corner and keep Argentina's bid to retain the World Cup alive.
La Albiceleste will take on either Switzerland or Colombia in the last eight, with that game set to take place later this evening.
