Enzo Maresca says three players who started against Brighton & Hove Albion will need to be assessed to see if they are fit to play Benfica tomorrow evening.

Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro all picked up knocks during Saturday’s defeat to the Seagulls, and Maresca confirmed the trio will be reviewed, with a training session set to take place at Cobham later today.

‘Unfortunately we have many players out injured,’ said Maresca.

‘This afternoon we are going to assess Caicedo, Joao Pedro and Andrey Santos. Unfortunately for us they all have small problems. We are going to see if they are available for tomorrow.

‘For sure in this moment we have injuries, but we have a squad to try to replace the injuries we have.’

Maresca says whatever team he selects, the Blues will need to play at a high level to compete in this Champions League fixture, our first at the Bridge in two-and-a-half years.

The head coach was asked at his press conference for more detail on Benfica, who we defeated in the Club World Cup earlier this summer.

‘For sure it will be a completely different game compared to the Club World Cup game,’ said Maresca.

‘It’s a bit more difficult to prepare for this game because they have only played three or four games with Jose [Mourinho]. All the games I started watching were with the former manager [Bruno Lage], but I watched three or four games with Jose and some games when he was at Man United, Spurs or Roma.'

Maresca added: ‘From Benfica you can expect the way they’re playing now, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, but you can also expect they can play with a back five.

‘I expect two or three different things, and we have a plan for each one.’
