One benefit of the international break for Enzo Maresca was the chance for him to start working with new signing Alejandro Garnacho.

The 21-year-old attacker joined Chelsea shortly before the transfer window closed and has since got down to business at Cobham, building up his fitness and getting to know his new team-mates and the Blues head coach.

And speaking at his pre-match conference this morning ahead of our trip to Brentford, Maresca discussed Garnacho’s start to life in blue.

‘He’s working well,’ said Maresca. ‘For sure, he needs to work because he arrived here not 100 per cent fit, but he is working well, and hopefully soon we can give him minutes.’

Chelsea secured the services of another Argentine attacker during the final days of the transfer window, signing Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion for the season. Maresca gave his verdict on the 20-year-old.

‘He’s a good player,' the Blues head coach explained. 'I know him because he was in Leicester, and I was there, so I have some contacts there.

‘He’s a player who can help us. We have so many competitions, so many games, that for sure he is going to play games for us.’

Those two new acquisitions make it three Argentineans in the Chelsea squad – alongside, of course, three Brazilians.

The longest-serving member of that group is Enzo Fernandez. Our vice-captain has picked up where he left off last term, starting the season by scoring two goals and providing an assist.

Impressively, Fernandez has been involved in 14 goals in our past 18 games, netting five times and creating nine more.

Maresca understands the 24-year-old needed time to adapt when he signed for Chelsea – and then again when our head coach took over. Now, though, he believes Fernandez is near the top of his game.

‘Enzo is a great player,’ said Maresca. ‘He struggled a little bit at the beginning of last season to understand what we want from him, then in the moment he understood the situation, he has been a much better player.

‘I see Enzo more as an attacking midfielder. The numbers also show that in terms of goals and assists. Hopefully, he can continue in the same way.’
